Today we snuck @JordanPeele into a back row while I was screening a scene from Get Out in my #blackhorror class. Then he raised his hand.

In Charlottesville, after shouts of "Jews will not replace us!" & anti-racism activist Heather Heyer's murder, Tr*mp said "very fine people on both sides" and helped normalize violent anti-Semitism & white supremacy. This is his legacy. His followers still refuse to see it.
On Wednesday, the day the first explosive devices were found, a white gunman tried to walk into a black church in Kentucky to shoot worshipers. When he couldn't get in, he went to a parking lot and killed a black man & woman." WEDNESDAY.
No, mass shootings are not new. But the deadly combination of poor gun control and a president who uses rhetoric to activate violence has created a crisis Congress has REFUSED to address. TR*MP is all of the worst things we said he would be, and Congress has done NOTHING.

This is life for black people under y'all's police state. Black men, women and children. Don't complain to me about "identity politics." It's called trying to live. Trying to raise our families. Trying to survive.
A year ago, my son & friends were as upset when they saw police handcuff a black teen at the park. "He wasn't doing anything." I wrote to our local police chief. To her credit, she called immediately to address it. But in the end, it was neighbors: "See something, say something."
So, yes, we need a drastic reimagining of policing practices in the U.S. The word "reform" doesn't even begin to cover it. But then we're still stuck with too many whites for whom black and brown skin alone is often cause for alarm. And the entitlement of calling police over B.S.

Today is #InternationalMigrantsDay

Our country is a beacon of freedom. But there is one type of freedom that is not talked about much: freedom of movement. It may be voluntary or forced, but one thing is clear: it must be with dignity.
Today, I honor my parents, displaced in the Partition of India. I honor the clients from 115 countries I've served for 15 years, many right here in Virginia. I honor our lawmakers, advocates, teachers, and men & women in uniform who have fought to protect freedom of movement.
And today, I call out the opportunistic bigots who've been fomenting at the mouth at America's magnificent diversity. I call out the elected "leaders" who gorge themselves on a diet of division. I call out the prison-industrial complex for profiting from human incarceration.

The prison industrial complex is a system of bondage, torture commodification & death (both literal and civil). You cannot make it good. I am therefore in favor of dismantling it in its totality. It's called abolition. If you need that broken down further: bit.ly/2KuZYiT
The prison system is impossible to justify upon any close examination, so people do not examine it. They do not think about it. They simply accept its false inevitability. They have been conditioned to fear one another so much that they believe that millions of ppl deserve hell.
The children who have been taken at the border have been snatched from criminalized parents, but in their case, we see past the criminalization. We see context and complexity. There are millions of families separated by the prison system whose criminalization ppl don't see past.

So, let me do a bit of story time on @KanyeWest, since he thinks he's out of The Sunken Place. And I can't thank @JordanPeele enough for his metaphor.

I have a confession. The only reason why I am not mad at @KanyeWest right now is because I have held a petty grudge against him for many years because he had a mother with a Ph.D. who taught Literature at Chicago State University, yet he named his first album, "College Dropout."
I did not mean to hold the grudge that long; but it just continued because of everything I would feel every single time I saw that album and thought about not only his Mother but everything at Chicago State University, home of the Gwendolyn Brooks Black Writer's Conference.
