I was so excited I forgot to say it’s a BLACK HORROR doc - but I’m on my phone at Starbucks and can’t wait to tweet more about this when I get home!!!

THREAD: In 2017, @JordanPeele's GET OUT let the world know that #blackhorror is on the map and it is POWERFUL. But in 2011, brilliant scholar Robin R. Means Coleman (@meanscoleman) had published HORROR NOIRE: Blacks in American Horror Films from the 1890s to Present #HorrorNoire
With that growing momentum, I designed my #BlackHorror class, The Sunken Place, at @AfamUCLA (and other scholars like @JIJennings did too). @Monkeypaw saw me tweeting about my course and @JordanPeele surprised my students in a viral visit: ew.com/movies/2017/10… #HorrorNoire
2018: I was invited to co-exec produce a doc called #HorrorNoire that Ashlee Blackwell (@GraveyardSister) & @PhilNobileJr set up at @shudder. Peele also agreed to be interviewed in the doc, dir by awesome @XLNB. (@meanscoleman @KellyRyanWest & @danielleburrows also on the team)

I was traveling during most of the shoot & missed interviews w/Peele & many Black Horror icons in this doc. But I was glad to be on set the day directors @RustyCundieff (Tales From the Hood) and Ernest R. Dickerson (Demon Knight, also LOTS of horror TV) were there #HorrorNoire
Was also thrilled to get to hang a bit with Black Horror icons Ken Foree @TheRealKenForee (DAWN OF THE DEAD) and Keith David (THE THING, THEY LIVE, PITCH BLACK, the list goes on!) #HorrorNoire
Many horror fans probably already realize that horror is a valuable tool in addressing trauma. Filmmakers like Jordan Peele, Rusty Cundieff, Bill Gunn & others have used horror to fight sacrificial tropes & erasure, exact retribution and visualize racial trauma. #HorrorNoire
My love for horror is in my genes. I've been publishing horror since 1995. The first horror fan in my life was my late mother, Patricia Stephens Due, a civil rights activist traumatized in the 1960s. I now understand she used horror to process pain. (Photo: 1963, Tallahassee, FL)

This is life for black people under y'all's police state. Black men, women and children. Don't complain to me about "identity politics." It's called trying to live. Trying to raise our families. Trying to survive.
A year ago, my son & friends were as upset when they saw police handcuff a black teen at the park. "He wasn't doing anything." I wrote to our local police chief. To her credit, she called immediately to address it. But in the end, it was neighbors: "See something, say something."
So, yes, we need a drastic reimagining of policing practices in the U.S. The word "reform" doesn't even begin to cover it. But then we're still stuck with too many whites for whom black and brown skin alone is often cause for alarm. And the entitlement of calling police over B.S.
