Record Numbers of Americans Dying of Overdoses. Instead of Justice, We Get Theater👨‍⚖️

"Whole thing is kabuki theater, It ought to be about money" said Ausness. "About who pays what & instead they want to make Sacklers listen to people complain about them"

Guggenheim joined several other museums last week w/an announcement they are removing the Sackler nameplate from their arts center,

Once again victims are being offered busy work as though it were meaningful reform.

The head of a particular department called me last week to inform me about a staff in his department. He was surprised to note that I knew the person and had referred him for more detailed work. I then told him where I see staff in his campus (without regn) to decrease #stigma
Today I saw three patients from his dept. He had sent them. He had enough trust. Would continue to work with all of them.
It is a great joy when people in your hospital start recognizing your work. Nothing pleases a clinician more than referrals from colleagues.
One of the three had optic neuritis. He is off #alcohol now. He is struggling with #tobacco. I told him it is understandable that he couldn't stop even though he knows the price he is paying is hugh. This is how #Addiction is. Told him to consider a quit date.

I commented on the CDC's rewrite.
For whatever that's worth.
I'm exhausted, angry, & now grieving a loss that no parent should ever have to face.
I've had my health & ability to live stolen and lost far too many people I love and care about to this #OpioidInsanity.
Thread...👇🏼
2- My comment?
You have no intention of ending this atrocity. You have had people in the pain community chasing their tails for years while asking for our input and 'comments'.

3-We've explained over and over that we are suffering and dying out here in the real world. That MDs tell us to our faces that they are AFRAID of the DEA, and that we are not worth risking their licenses over.

2-A patients need for opiate pain meds should not be determined on addiction treatment issues. Nor should it necessitate recreational drug advocacy. Those are NOT our fights.
People in pain have been deemed acceptable collateral damage in an ongoing, doomed to fail drug war.
3-And here we are. Tens of millions of people in pain told that we should be helping get access to #MAT for thoes w/addiction issues, and help legalize recreational drugs, all while we watch our frends in the pain community dying due to lack of needed legal/safe MEDICINES.

Thread: Addiction is complex. It's deadlier than ever. But there's hope. “We just had a newborn daughter,” Travis Rasco told me. “We're trying to buy a house right now. Something I never thought I deserved for the longest time.” @npr 1/ npr.org/2022/01/13/107…
My story for @MorningEdition @npr explores data showing the majority of people who experience substance use disorder survive & often thrive. “This is really good news I think and something to share and be hopeful about,” said Dr. John Kelly at the Recovery Research Institute. 2/
@MorningEdition @NPR Racial bias makes recovery harder for people of color like Anna Mable-Jones, a Black woman who struggled to find treatment & was incarcerated. But after a decade-long addiction to cocaine, she healed. “I'm a homeowner, I own a car, I started my own business,” she said @npr 3/

What’s the deal w/ people in #pain using #opioids? (Read entire thread.) We are not “drug addicts.” We are physically DEPENDENT on our meds, which we need to function w/out pain (i.e, to function). Physical dependence occurs on heart meds & #antidepressants too. #ThisIsUs
And I am not trying to stigmatize #addiction here. But rly, let’s talk; chronic pain patients (#CPPs) have been forced to KILL themselves due to untreated pain, due to bad #policy, due to the #stigma, foolishness & financial incentives of others. This has a name: opiophobia…
If you took me off ALL opioids, I (like most #painpatients) would go through ugly opioid #withdrawals (and make sure to poop/puke on YOU for causing them)! 😂

And even after months of “abstaining,” and withdrawals disappearing, I would be “clean” in the eyes of the world, but…

Essential: liquor, malls, fast food/drivethrus

Non-essential: schools, "non-urgent" surgeries, fitness, in-person addiction services

#Canada, Nov 30 2021: Lockdown measures led to 4000+ excess deaths (Deloitte/#CMA) & 500,000+ fewer surgeries (CIHI).

Not about saving lives.
"4,000 excess deaths not related to COVID19 infections" is artificially low as # is based on 5-month period (Aug-Dec 2020).

Long-term care deaths with covid as of Dec 22,2020 represented 10,247 (72%) of all deaths in Canada with Covid (14,291).

Pop. of Canada: 38 million.

🧵 #Overdose deaths hit record highs last year. Medications like buprenorphine cut the risk of death in half. But many pharmacies don’t provide it, saying they fear a @DEAHQ investigation -- like what happened to Martin Njoku. My latest for @NPR @KHNews buff.ly/3H5FQhK
2/ As a pharmacist, Martin Njoku wanted to help those hit by the #opioidepidemic. But a few years after he began providing medications for #addiction, @DEAHQ raided his pharmacy & accused him of furthering the very ailment he set out to treat.
3/ DEA pointed to "red flags" at Njoku's pharmacy: ppl getting Subutex—considered easier to abuse than Suboxone— ppl driving from far away, paying in cash, etc. But @Formanir @hfdrlaw explained that's what happens when Suboxone is too expensive & access to treatment is scarce.

Looking forward to giving the keynote address at this morning’s launch of the @SeeChangeIRL 9th annual #GreenRibbonIRL #EndTheStigma campaign.

The theme of this year’s campaign is Exclusion - a topic very close to my heart as minister with responsibility for social inclusion.
With every campaign & with every #GreenribbonIRL worn publicly there are increased chances to #EndTheStigma of mental illness & start conversations. With this campaign there is more opportunity than ever to really turn around how we think and talk about mental illness.
We have all now shared a mentally & emotionally traumatic experience of living through a pandemic. Obviously that trauma different for everyone, but I believe that in 1 way or another everyone has had a traumatic experience in the past 18 months simply by living through pandemic.

1/🧵🎥 MAJOR TIPS about #Liver Disease

Why do we ask pts to “hold up traffic”? When people get severe liver disease, “asterixis” is a finding on exam we often see.

What does it mean?

#MedTwitter #NurseTwitter #TipsforNewDocs #Addiction
2/ Asterixis indicates that toxins like ammonia have built up in the body because the scarred liver no longer filters them out. The brain cells no long function normally (#Delirium or Hepatic #Encephalopathy) & can no longer control muscle movements like posture!
3/ These same toxin cause vessels to dilate and develop problems with blood flow in the skin and lungs. A skin finding is called “spiders.” They look like a multi-legged spider, right? It’s a tip-off.

1-Let's be clear. If it weren't for the false narrative that RX opiates were driving OD deaths, no one would be supporting 'saving' people battling addiction.

2-It was only after (white) Uppper & Middle Class Americans, (especially people of affluence), began losing loved ones and kids due to a deadly drug supply that the 'false narrative' about 'opioids' became mainstream.

3-Drug deaths & addiction, even to 'opioids', has been around a very long time. In fact, the drug war, like any other war, is a profitable enterprise.

Update: My doctor lowered my pain meds AGAIN last month KNOWING how poorly I am tolerating this forced wean. Despite being forced off my meds they made me see the "#addiction doctor" to assess my "risk" of addiction & that appt was yesterday.
During that visit he actually said "I need to just get used to the #pain & I'll be fine", he said " everyone's going this #opioid free route & you have to deal with it" & a few other absurd things. I was literally in tears the entire appointment...
He asked if I wanted to "see someone & possibly get meds" because I was in tears from pain, feeling afraid, unheard & ignored, to which I explained that this is NOT an emotional or mental issue that it's purely a horrific pain & suffering issue... I politely declined the help.

I posted this yesterday with parents permission. I wanted to expand on this video a bit.

1st, a big part of me feels very uncomfortable with posting. Just like a big part of me felt uncomfortable about posting about my kids experience (w permission). It feels exploitive. 1/
Yet, when I share experiences of #caregivers & or #patients (who had given me permission to share) those experiences were/are often questioned or I’ve been excused of exaggerating. Or like many others called a #shill for #Pharmaceutical companies. I am a mother, who 2/
witnessed first hand the harms of pain ignored, not treated, under treated or labeled as #psychosomatic. I remember very vividly how my kids would arch their backs in pain & scream. How helpless I felt. I have seen the repercussions of this #harm & am absolutely obsessed 3/

2/ His family was very upset when his “next right thing” was to check out against medical advice. I shared a quote from @MalibuMelB (M. Beattie): “Others don’t know what’s best for us. We do not know what’s best for others. Our main job is to determine what’s best for ourselves.”
3/ Terminology: Addiction vs. Substance-Use Disorder…there are many things people can be addicted to besides “substances.” Addictions to things like exercise, love, money, control of others, etc. For this🧵, I am referring to addiction broadly…and how it robs people of joy.
