Don’t whiteboard interviewees. Use something else instead. If you must have them write Code, have it be on their computer with their preferred toolset.
Alternatives: print out some code from an actual internal PR. Explain the problem and ask them to tell you why it works. Ask if there are alternative ways to do the same thing.
Pair on some Code with them. Pick an open source project or app that will be similar to what they would do in their actual job
If they have open source commits ask them to pick a few and walk the interviewer through the problem, how it was debugged, and he eventual solution
Hire them without knowing if they can Code for a probationary period maybe 3months and fire them if they don’t perform.
Also communicate what you’ll be doing with them up front before the interview and how they will be judged.
