I *really* think people need to understand how ahistorical & morally egregious Roy Moore’s comments were when he said, “I think it was great at the time when families were united — even though we had slavery.”

This is what slavery did to black families:
The thing about Roy Moore’s slavery comments is that they reinforce a mythology held by so many Americans. One that’s meant to completely disregard how destructive the institution was, how it was violent beyond words.
I know some people think slavery is brought up too much. That they’re tired of hearing about it. That it’s a broken record.

But I don’t think we discuss it nearly enough. We don’t discuss what it actually was. We don’t discuss what it did. What it took away from so many.
