I have found the recent hypocrisy we’ve seen fascinating, and almost refreshing, because blatant hypocrisy shows us the unspoken truth of what people actually support and believe and when we can point it out we can do something about it. THREAD

Two years ago most Americans might have thought that the GOP stood for fiscal responsibility, states rights, and strict moral codes.

Some believed the House Intelligence committee cared about Hillary's emails because they wanted checks on power or worried about a foreign govt accessing sensitive state secrets. nytimes.com/2017/09/25/us/…
We might have thought the histrionics over a tan suit or sleeveless dress was because Fox News really cared about what it meant for an American to be "presidential" on the world stage
Or believed that religious leaders put honesty, marital fidelity, and ethics first.
We might even have thought that racism had lost its hold or that women were being treated equally.
Trump has done us the favor of ripping off the band aid and shedding light on exactly what we, as a nation, will accept as opposed to what we say. The real question is: What are we, as individuals, going to DO about it?
We’ve had it easy & gotten complacent but this is still a democracy, we still have a rule of law, checks and balances, and most importantly an unrestricted voice that we can use to vote, or take to the streets, petition, sue, or to write comments with.
if we aren’t using our power and voice then it may be time to look within and ask ourselves, Do we secretly support inequality of one kind or another because we think it might give us a personal leg up?
True democracy supports an equal voice for all. If we think that white men deserve a vote & innocence under the law, & don't support the same for black men, women, Muslims, or immigrants aren’t we tacitly supporting police violence, blame the victim mentality, & brutal ICE raids?
Did we vote for a man who blatantly lies because we thought He would pick a Supreme Court justice we liked, or make sure Muslims don't gain any power, or limit immigration from brown countries because we secretly think it will promote our own religion or somehow give us more?
If we quietly think women need to get put back into "their place" then we may excuse sexual assault as "virile" and masculine
if what is truly important to us is to make a little more by getting a tax break, then we may support politicians who are in the pocket of special interests and be complicit when our elderly neighbor runs out of meals on wheels.
If we think it would be fun to have an AR-15 and that our own family and children are safe from harm we may vote for unqualified politicians because they have an A+ from the NRA and be complicit in the deaths of other’s children.
Trump and the GOP are nothing but a referendum on America and what we actually, secretly, want, fear, or support.
That being said so was Obama and the Dems, and now we have to decide which direction we are going to take our future.
Supposedly, Hitler had 30% support, and 30% opposition but 30% were quiet and it was the quiet ones who ultimately allowed for the rise of the Third Reich. So we’d better start looking straight into this ugly mess, and determining where we each honestly stand on these issues
then start fully participating in our democracy, not only as a once every 4 year vote, but by being willing, daily, to voice what we stand for with our reps, our friends, and in the streets when we have to.
Only we can decide if this 200 year experiment in Democracy is valuable enough to set aside our prejudices, our greed, and our fear of speaking out in order to uphold it and make this place better for us all.
