Adding some questions here, some of which were asked in Zuck's media call yesterday. Full disclosure, I worked for the NewsHour as as desk assistant right out of college and am a Judy fan. Also, these are impt and complex issues w enormous implications for privacy and democracy.
1. In Nov 2016 Mark Zuckerberg said it was “pretty crazy” to say that FB users were microtargeted w propaganda, but yesterday FB admitted Cambridge Analytica may have improperly accessed the info of 87 million users. Why did it take so long to make this announcement?
2. FB was notified in 2015 that the Cruz campaign was using FB user data harvested from CA. At the time, FB said it was “carefully investigating the situation.” What was the result of your internal investigation?
3.The BBC reported in 2017 that FB had staffers onsite working with the Trump campaign and CA. How many people did FB have working w the Trump campaign and what did they do?
4. Bloomberg reported last Oct that FB and Google helped a dark money group called Secure America Now (w $2 million from Robert Mercer) microtarget millions of dollars in anti-Muslim and anti-refugee ads to swing state voters. Did FB employees assist SAN in that campaign?
5.Why is CA whistleblower Chris Wylie banned from FB?
6.Did FB hire a CA employee Joseph Chancellor who worked on the CA harvesting project? What does he do for FB now?
7.Chris Wylie told a Parliamentary committee that CA had several meetings w Palantir and Palantir employees worked w harvested FB data. Peter Thiel is on FB’s board. Does FB have any business relationship w Palantir?
8. Will FB accept the results of the independent ICO investigation or is FB conducting its own investigation?
9. UK MP Damian Collins has asked Mark three times to testify about FB/CA’s role in Brexit. Yesterday, Mark told a BBC reporter he again would not appear before Parliament but would send other “top folks.” Should UK users hear from either you or Mark?
10.Yesterday FB announced that most of its 2B users have had their profiles “scaped by malicious actors.” How does FB think these malicious actors might use this scraped data? What is FB doing to prevent this from happening?
11.Mark will testify in Congress on April 11. The NYT ed board said Congress should pass EU-style privacy rules for Americans. Yesterday Mark said FB would apply new European privacy laws to all users. Should Congress pass an EU-style privacy law to protect Americans?
12.Facebook has 2.3 billion users - owns Insta, WhatsApp and Oculus Rift. Mark has compared the challenges FB confronts to those of a nation state, yet unlike a nation state users cannot vote for FB leaders. Is FB is like its own nation state and has it become too powerful?
13.Mark said FB uses targeted ads bc many ppl in the world cannot afford to pay. What is FB's responsibility to protect its 2.3 billion users’ privacy and prevent future meddling in democratic processes?
