The Fed's out with its annual survey of how the folks are doing, economics-wise. This year they asked about opioids. 1/4 white Americans knew someone suffering from opioid addiction, compared to 1/5 people overall. federalreserve.gov/publications/f…
3/10 Americans have income that varies month to month and 1/6 have irregular work schedules imposed by their employers, even though 3/5 would prefer a job with stable pay over a job that paid slightly more.
1/5 adults couldn't cover all their bills that month and 1/4 skipped necessary medical care in 2017 because they couldn't afford it.
1/4 of students who went to for-profit colleges are behind on their loans, vs 1/10 students who went to a public or private non-profit school.
31% of adults had income from some kind of gig work, up from 28% in 2016, with most of the increase coming from offline work (not online platforms like Uber).
3% of non-homeowners were evicted or left their apartment because of the threat of eviction over the past two years. Also, 50% of white renters reported difficulty getting landlords to make repairs, compared to 35% of black renters.
Interesting factoid: nearly half of adults live within 10 miles of where they went to high school. Which can't be the place where they would earn the most money or have the best quality of life.
College grads are snobs. Those with BAs find vocational/technical training to have the worst cost/benefit calculation of all academic fields, which is pretty wrong.
20% of white adults have no retirement savings vs. 39% of Hispanics.
This is crazy. Among people with BAs, men are nearly twice as likely to be comfortable investing self-directed retirement savings than women. That doesn't mean they're better at it -- active management can be pretty dumb. But it probably leads to some men being way better off.
But don't worry guys, things are mostly getting better!
