Peter Navarro is at @CSIS saying that the admin is pursuing a "fundamental restructuring of our economy back to a manufacturing and industrial base, whereby people can work with their hands with dignity and earn a decent wage.” csis.org/events/economi…
(Altered tweet slightly after going back over the tape)
Now he's in full cry defending arms sales as a way of creating jobs at home. "What this is is the first whole-of-government assessment ever of the defense industrial base."
He's not wrong that the disappearance of manufacturing jobs destabilized communities & that there's value in retaining/evolving production jobs. The annoying thing is his disregard for the service jobs that have powered our economy--& perhaps not coincidentally, are more female.
And meanwhile, he seems totally fixated on defense production as a way of creating blue collar jobs, with NO MENTION of infrastructure investment, which would be a way more productivity-enhancing way to spend money.
Navarro is visibly angry talking about China and how he says they haven't followed through on deals--like the one they struck with Trump to import U.S. beef. "Where's the beef??" Navarro huffs. "Where's the beef!"
Navarro wants the U.S. government to get a tungsten industry started again through subsidies. "In terms of giving out money, this won’t be corporate welfare, it will be seed money. We view it the same way a venture capitalist in Silicon Valley would view it."
In its FY'19 budget, the White House proposed eliminating @ENERGY's technology loan guarantee programs because "the private sector is better positioned to finance the deployment of commercially viable energy and advanced vehicle manufacturing
projects." whitehouse.gov/wp-content/upl…
