🚨A member of the Yanomami ppl died after being shot in the head & 2 more were injured in another brutal attack on Saturday by illegal miners, in the Yanomami Uxiu community.

Murders & violence against Indigenous ppl in the area have increased as more & more miners settle there. The following day a governmental team was also shot at trying to remove illegal miners from the #Yanomami Indigenous Territory, whilst four miners, including a powerful ringleader, were killed in the confrontation.

⚠️ The desperate health crisis unfolding in the Yanomami’s territory hasn’t happened overnight… we’ve been warning the Brazilian authorities about this for years.

1/ Alongside #Indigenous organizations, we’ve been pushing for the removal of more than 20,000 illegal gold miners from Yanomami lands - an invasion that’s increased dramatically since former President Bolsonaro took office in 2019.

On New Year’s Day, #LulaDaSilva was sworn in as president of Brazil.

Raoni Metuktire, a leader of the Mebêngôkre (Kayapó) people, together with other representatives, walked up the ramp and took part in the ceremony to hand over the presidential sash.

On the Brazil-Peru border, a group of indig ppl have approached a Manchineri village, in the Mamoadate Indig Territory in BR. The Manchineri say the group are members of the uncontacted Mashco Piro tribe.
