I read this yesterday. I keep wanting to scream. This is an important piece. But it is nowhere damning enough. A few thoughts: 1/ theatlantic.com/magazine/archi… First, it is surprising to notice someone who ran relentless cover for the Biden withdrawal last August seems to feel bad about it now & is made out to be someone of conscience here. It's puzzling, but not the point of the piece. 2/

Rush Limbaugh's legacy of stoking hate, bigotry, insults & lies will sadly live on. Remembering today the bile he spewed at veterans. Like when he called veterans wounded in Iraq "phony soldiers" for speaking up about the lies that started the war: abcnews.go.com/Politics/Vote2… On transgender military service, Rush Limbaugh offered this "support" for the troops: "So the Trannies Could Now Get Into The Military Along With Everybody Else. Of Course, What Could Go Wrong?" mediamatters.org/rush-limbaugh/…

A few years ago @CapitolPolice arrested more than 150 peaceful protesters, many of them sexual assault survivors, using their 1st amendment right to protest the Kavanaugh nomination. I haven't been able to find one report or photo of any marauders or looters arrested today. When disability rights protesters peacefully objected to cuts in Medicaid, more than 180 were arrested. @CapitolPolice took down people with physical disabilities. I have not yet found even one marauder or looter handled like these disabled heroes were.

I don't wish COVID-19 or any illness on anyone. But like countless others, I'm enraged it took this long for the WH to put on masks. To treat this as the crisis it is. 210k dead. Mourning families. Unpayable medical debts. Lost jobs & businesses. This global tragedy is unending. Seeing discussions of helicopter vs. ground travel from WH to Walter Reed - which is well and interesting - got me thinking of March-May in NYC when ambulances were constant, EMS & ER staff were overwhelmed & hospitals had morgue trailers filling with our neighbors & loved ones.

That "308,000 deaths in the military" number is very specific, so I did a simple search. Appears that 308,000 is the number of civilian casualties in Iraq. Real numbers, real lives - zero context here in #Debates2020. statista.com/chart/20699/es… More than 20k people died of COVID-19 in my city. Healthcare workers had no PPE. NYC begged for supplies & equipment as morgue trailers filled. Deceased people were carried away in rental vans. We were failed by our federal govt profoundly. politico.com/news/2020/03/2…

"We are united & if they try to divide us they will not succeed." NYC has been labeled an "anarchist jurisdiction" but so many diverse Brooklyn neighbors came out tonight in sorrow, pain & anger to say that there was no justice today for #BreonnaTaylor. #BlackLivesMatter A massive crowd in front of Barclays laid down flat, observing the full 8 minutes 46 seconds #GeorgeFloyd choked under a policeman's knee. We heard so many voices of pain tonight. #BreonnaTaylor #BlackLivesMatter Image

A perfect weekend to read USMC vet @DoctorFaz's new memoir. 19 yrs on, are those who served post-9/11 "suckers" or "losers"? There's much to take heart in Teresa's story that shows such dignity & honesty in sharing the deeply moral convictions of her service in "Fidelis." 1/6 Image Many who served in Iraq & Afghanistan never left their bases, but war nevertheless found them inside base walls. Teresa paints beautiful & frighteningly vivid scenes of daily life in Iraq where she did maybe one of the most critical jobs of our digitally-connected wars. 2/6

Recent NY history reading: Mary Cable’s 1971 chronicle of the Amistad, which came ashore at Montauk Point in August 1839. Let me first say the Spielberg movie really got a lot wrong. And wow what cultural amnesia we have about transatlantic human trafficking. 1/9 The real story is 36 trapped Mende ppl surviving & exasperated w/ US justice punishing them & not their enslavers. Led by Sing-gbe (Cinque), broke free in Cuba & drifted to Montauk. James Covey, a Mende sailor who’d been freed by British navy, served as their translator. 2/9 ImageImage

There's a lot to be concerned about in NYC right now. People are struggling & it feels palpable on the streets. But I'm inspired too. Young people were out registering new voters today in downtown Brooklyn. 1/ I waited in line to get into @greenlightbklyn along w/ plenty of others excited to support this vital local business. Finally ordered a copy of @DoctorFaz's new book Fidelis. 2/

NYC Council stated meeting on the budget is finally on. Watching live: council.nyc.gov/livestream/ Unrelated, the St. Louis khakis-no-shoes-AR15 guy is telling Chris Cuomo he was a victim of terrorism. What a time to be alive.

#VanessaGuillen's disappearance & slow response from Army command brings up so much. First, this family in pain deserves closure & justice. #FindVanessaGuillen wapo.st/2YJCVaz But we also need to be talking more broadly about military's failure to address sexual harassment & assault of troops by colleagues & superiors. After 30+ years of "zero tolerance" policies, assaults & harassment keeps going up: bit.ly/2BOKjbG

Afghanistan is far less "graveyard of empires" than graveyard of all those--primarily Afghans--trapped in endless proxy wars. A thread: Image My first deployment was in 2006 & I remember talking at length with an older Afghan-American man working w/ US forces. He'd grown up in Helmand & fled in '70s when King Zahir Shah was deposed. I remember asking him why Afghanistan couldn't find peace. I wanted to know.

Watching @NY1 tonight & my partner sees story of #sandyguardiola tonight at McCarren Park vigil. They were friends in social work school & she didn't know Sandy had been shot in her own home by police. Processing the shock of this life lost in 2017. #JusticeForSandyG ImageImage "Sandy was a survivor," she remembers. She'd defeated cancer & lost her mother as she began social work grad program. There's plenty to admire about life & career of Ulysses S. Grant. It's also equally true he was last US president w/ history as slave owner/master. Maybe the point is America needs to hit reset on who we literally put on pedestals. And take a break w/ the "not that one" opining. Image Before I get replies of "but he didn't like slavery", "he ended slavery," etc., Grant did himself own one person. He also managed several more slaves on his wife's farm. bit.ly/2NdVoFo
