Great leadership from community member & activist, Kendra, at Saturday’s #solidarity walk in #Simcoe Landing!

Calling all #youth: Check out this opportunity to discuss w/ youth panelists on the #BLMmovement, esp. on what's happening at schools. They'll also cover issues that #Indigenous students & communities face in the education system.

1/5 As ppl try their best to stay home, political leaders need to stop scolding us for not #socialdistancing & start addressing real issues: underfunded healthcare, unfair wages & working conditions of essential-service workers, imprisonment of ppl (ex: migrant facilities, jail). 2/5 It is unjust for individuals to bear the brunt of #capitalism, which has caused these very issues by prioritizing money over ppl. Those who suffer the most are our most vulnerable: elderly who are more likely to die from #Covid_19 & students heading back to school this week.

Part 2 of @AsianAllies Student Series included honouring the story of 14 yo #EmmettTill & looking at systemic issues that affect Blk folks. Asian students at @MiddlefieldCI were invited to challenge the ways in which they were privileged & consider being an ally for Blk students. ImageImageImageImage Some @YRDSB students’ comments & questions: We only learn about Western/white histories in History class!? Asians & Blk characters are quickly killed off on TV shows & movies. What kind of Asian are we talking about? The systems have situated Blk folks to face such circumstances!

History has taught me to be a better friend & educator. I don’t believe in letting go of the past, as the past has shaped who we are & how we live. While we may believe we have all the choices in the world, we are restricted by systems & attitudes that we dont think about enough. ImageImageImageImage I have too much to say about the continual & clear existence of anti-Black racism so I’ll just point out that it was phenom learning w/ @eji_org & I’m excited to use this incredible calendar I picked up at @splcenter. #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackHistory365 #BlackHistoryMonth2020

So much to digest from #FESI2019 that it took me a while to collect my thoughts on the conference theme, “Dismantling the Barriers to Education.” Super cool to bump into #anticolonialism classmate, @ZainabZ01 from @OISEUofT! @tdsb/@YRDSB #teacherfriends Heard great stuff from the first panel on addressing marginalized students & staff. @NHenryFundi @jeewanc @JhonelMorvan @nngafook

Q for y’all: Beyond listening ears, self-reflection & overcoming fragility, what is the role of white students & teachers at schools? #whiteness Image

Check out “Relational Being: Beyond Self & Community” by Kenneth Gergen. It challenges the sense of self/individual by referring to the concept of “multi-being” & frames relationships in a co-creating, co-action where you are in a “dance” w/ someone else. Helped me approach relationships in multiple ways that were much more meaningful & lessened my frustration w/ conflict. Ofc I’m not perfect at it but it’s brought me a lot further on dealing with relationships & reminds me of what I need to contribute in collective care.

I don't think I have much say in what's happening in #HongKong, given that I've only lived there for the first four years of my life & have visited there a handful times as an adult. #hongkongcanadian Photos From the Hong Kong Extradition Protests nyti.ms/2X3ywPH However I have loved ones living there & my grandparents had worked hella hard to move to HK where they ended up having my parents & them having me. I've always been proud to say that I was born in HK while living in Canada & it's always been joyful talking about my visits there.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of listening to #RobinDiAngelo, scholar in critical racial & #socialjusticeeducation. How cool is it that I used one of her slides for my students the day before her talk! For my presentation, I had an additional pic (re: @fordnation cabinet). Image Still amazed I got to meet an idol of mine at @CIECYR1 Equity Symposium.😱 Her talk on #whiteprivilege, #whiteness & #whitefragility was on point, esp w/ the pillars underwater that uphold white racial narratives and calling out folks who ask the ignorant Q of “Now what I do?” ImageImageImageImage

Tonight (Mar 25, 7:30pm), Town of #RichmondHill Council will decide on a motion introduced by Councillor @DavidWestRH to begin all council meetings with a #landacknowledgment. Come out to Town of Richmond Hill Council Chamber (225 East Beaver Creek) to support the motion! I've lived in Richmond Hill for most of my life so this is important to me. I just emailed the entire Town of #RichmondHill Council about supporting this motion. It is one of the first steps towards #truth and #reconciliation but it is not the last.

There’s no words to express how ecstatic I am to be doing what I love. To have a paid job that allows for creativity and that aligns with my values in bettering the world brings so much joy that it really doesn’t feel like I’m working.💖🙌🏼 In this world that is needing more community and healing, I am so thankful to be co-facilitating a youth program that prioritizes student identities, well-being and civic engagement.✊🏼

It’s been a long week but spending my Saturday listening to my colleagues’ presentations on #anticolonialism, #decolonization, #indigeneity and #solidarity is so invigorating! #ongoinglearning #OISEUofT Image Three modes of a pedagogy of #solidarity: relational, transitive and creative. #ongoinglearning #OISEUofT Image
