Last story before I sleep: On Sept 8 last year, I was assaulted by PC Anatol Goldlioust (hereafter referred to as ‘the pig’) with the Toronto Police in front of 100s of witnesses in broad daylight. I was left bleeding in the street and the police paramedics refused to treat me.
The pig then went on to assault a white woman, at which point his colleagues finally intervened and pulled him off her. Lol. I was pulled into a nearby Tim’s by a stranger who traded clothes with me and helped staunch the bleeding in my mouth. Mona, wherever you are, thank you.
I was unable to use my left shoulder for a while following the assault and my mouth was swollen and bruised. I was crying in my dance classes. I wasn’t sleeping. I was leaving work early for doctors appointments, x-rays, and dentist appointments. My tooth was loose.

I was born in Newfoundland in 1998. No such thing as Qalipu FN at that point. When Nfld joined confederation in 1949, premier Joey Smallwood declared there was no Indians there and yadda yadda. It took 2/3 generations of fighting for recognition for Qalipu FN to become a thing.
HOWEVER the conditions of recognition for Mi’kmaq in Nfld were all like “y’all gotta amalgamate into one giant band also y’all gotta be landless” and everyone at the time was like WOW what could possibly go wrong??
So eventually at some point as a child I got band membership and Indian Status and whatnot, hooray. But when they received a few too many applications (remember how they made every unrecognized band in Nfld join into one) they were like holy shit, this is way too many Injuns.

Next Wednesday @CityofVancouver staff report back to #Council on ramping up our #ClimateAction, in line with the #IPCC science and in response to the #ClimateEmergency. Here’s my breakdown of the recommendations 👇
This #ClimateEmergency report outlines 6 Big Moves for Council to direct staff to pursue & come back w. comprehensive/costed plans. Plus 53 Accelerated Actions to move on now. The targets are strong & won’t be easy. This is what governing in line with the science looks like.
Big Move 1: By 2030, 90% of people will live within an easy walk/roll of their daily needs (we’re at 45%). Focused on land-use & complete n'hoods, it would ⬇️ 153,000 tonnes carbon/year, while creating ⬆️ housing choices, ⬆️ social interaction, and supporting local businesses.

With this #cabinetshuffle @JustinTrudeau signals that #reconciliation is over for his government. Losing Wilson-Raybould in Justice and Philpott in Indigenous Services signals that Trudeau no longer wants to spend political capital on Indigenous peoples. He's moved on.
Clearly, Trudeau made a decision long before he was Prime Minister to pursue the national interest over Indigenous Peoples. That is his inheritance & birthright. But there was something about the symbolism of an Indigenous Minister of Justice that gave his policies credibility /2
This credibility was primarily with settlers & was not substantiated in the pipeline politics he has so vigorously pursued. Still, there were a lot of Indigenous peoples, both grassroots & band council leaders, who held a lot of hope with @Puglaas in Justice. That hope is over /3

1. Thread - Why I know Saskatchewan new trespassing law is racist bullshit. I live on a small farm where my husband grew up, at Meeting Lake, between 2 cabin developments. In 2009, when we moved back out here, I made ALOT of enemies by launching a war #skpoli #reconciliation
2. On cabin owners and campers from ATVing on our land and in our yard. PEOPLE FROM THE CITY WE DON'T KNOW. It had become a heavily traveled, they threw garbage everywhere, there was poaching. I put up no trespassing signs and chased people out. FOR YEARS. #tresspassing
3. By doing this, I became the single most hated person in the area. People glared at me. People screamed at in me community meetings that I was "ruining their holidays and had no right" Someone threatened to run me over with their QUAD after I caught them in my garden. #skpoli

#CSPC2018 @mgfortin_rd says #citizenscience and participative science is incredibly important. This isn't only including public in research, it's engaging communities who have knowledge incl #indigenous traditional knowledge.
... Current project ongoing, is a northern community that wants to better document the status of their natural resources (air quality, water) and to analyze the impact of #climatechange & other human impacts on these. There is added value to including these communities. #CSPC2018

Sitting in #ThunderBay #yqt airport reflecting on time I've spent here. People have shared heartening & devastating truths with me…
I saw the bounty of this land, offered prayer, & reflected on the beauty around me, how it's able to housing such hurt...
I just got out of a cab. The driver asked what I do, I tried to deflect (I'm not shy, but weeks on the road have left me tired)…

"As an act of reconciliation, let's take down statues of racists who tried to wipe out Indigenous Peoples."

"No, that would erase history."
"OK. How about we remove the racist logos, mascots, team names and other inaccurate stereotypes."

"No. Those honour Indigenous culture."
"How about returning the land and restoring Indigenous institutions of governance."

"Can't do that. Impractical."
