Long read out in the @SatPaper today, digging into the how and why did this all happen

The great carbon offset scam

#climatepolicy #carboncredits #carbonoffsets #safeguardmechanism

Some key points below 🧵:thesaturdaypaper.com.au/news/environme… 👉The root cause of this scandal is the Clean Energy Regulator, which has allowed HIR projects to include uncleared lands when the projects started in their credited areas

📝 There are multiple lines of evidence that show the HIR method should only be applied in locations...

The ANU-UNSW research team has analysed the recently released CEA (carbon estimation area) for HIR #carbon projects. The results are unsurprisingly bad. 🧵Full papers and interactive data linked below:
1/ HIR (human-induced regen of permanent even-aged native forest) carbon projects have generated ~30% of ACCUs issued under the #EmissionsReductionFund; 37 million ACCUs. They cover more than 31 million ha, ~ the size of Japan. The world’s largest offset type by project area.

The Australian Government @DCCEEW last week quietly released draft National Environmental Standards (NES) for Matters of National Environmental Significance (MNES) as part of its #EPBCAct reform.
*2 weeks consultation*, due 22 May 2023
A🧵on key issues👇
consult.dcceew.gov.au/draft-nes-for-… Note the overarching MNES standard is the first to be released, there are others in development that will be released (hopefully) soon, including for:
- Environmental Offsets
- Regional Planning
- First Nations Engagement and Participation
- Community Engagement

Two of the most mind-blowing things from #SafeguardMechanism @AuSenate inquiry this week were the govt saying:

1️⃣ the integrity of all existing #ACCUs is "fine"

2️⃣the Chubb review rec's only apply to *new projects* "going forward" - which is not what they said 4 weeks ago🧵 In this thread I'm sharing clips from the following videos, available here:

Oh cry me a river. How on earth could their projects be "undermined" by sharing data which could quickly an easily prove their integrity. #ACCU #climate #auspol Also nice for GreenCollar to put this on "it's landholders" so if we call this out we're being mean to farmers, rather a multi-million dollar corporation.

.@rini_rants and I interrogate the value and purpose of global maps in #conservation 👉
rdcu.be/cvWOY Image It's no secret that conservation science (and journals, and the media) loves a good global map - and there's a lot of them. We found >150 global priority maps published since 2000 (and that's DEFINITELY an UNDERestimate) Image

State schools are great schools 👊 Vienna Woods primary, Alexandra Hills State High #publiceducationday I've always, unfortunately, had a bit of a cringe reflex when asked what school I went to (a compulsary, ubiquitous question for anyone living in Brisbane) because NOONE I met during undergraduate uni had heard of my school

THIS. THERE IS NO ONE PATHWAY. If anyone, even if (especially if?) they are the *vice chancellor*, says the "only way" to get to X is to do Y, RUN. At an early career academic development workshop 3 years ago, I asked my VC what advice they had for ECRs on developing their careers in the context of PhD oversupply and greater emphasis on research demonstrating "impact". Their response?

🚨New paper! 🚨 We developed an approach to ensure #biodiversityoffsets that rely on protection of existing habitat 🌳 don't unintentionally worsen biodiversity loss 📉 Here's how 👉 Image I think we all know what #biodiversityoffsets are - but if not - check out the first 2 mins of this neat video created by @ZoeStoneNZ @martine_maron

I'm seeing a number of wonderful people on this website engaging with people who are demanding evidence for #ClimateChange and links with #AustraliaFires etc As hard as it is to resist when there's someone *wrong on the internet* please remember more facts often don't change minds, especially when identity is at stake. Focus on shared values and obtainable, positive solutions - see this great vid from @KHayhoe

While our focus has understandably been on the #AustraliaBushfires and the #Adani #coal project, another huge mine is due to be built soon, right on top of @BimbleboxNR smh.com.au/politics/queen… @BimbleboxNR This project has been granted State and Federal environmental approval, largely on the proviso of that impacts on @BimbleboxNR and its biodiversity will be "offset". I've described these issues here:

Sara Parrott @Suncorp #climatechange is an existential threat to the insurance industry. Suncorp will not underwite thermal coal projects from 2025. $39 billion in assets they can invest in for a better future #strandedassets #sustainablefinance #wftebrisbane Image Moving from fear of #climatechange and concern over backlash or sticking your neck out, to seeing it as a strategic risk, giving staff permission to engage can create massive organisational cultural shift. Interesting discussion re investment decisions being made by humans versus aLgORiThmS - wouldn't the latter be less influenced by cognitive biases? #GRASFI2019 Crucial question/comment from the floor - where is the evidence for impact "on the ground" from ESG and impact investing? Also need evidence on link between ESG and financial performance #GRASFI2019
