This is a good tweet thread but what it misses is that a predominantly renewable and electric powered global energy system will be fundamentally better than fossil fuels not just for the climate but for other impacts on human and environmental well-being.
1. The major inputs to RE & batteries like Lithium & copper can be recycled and reused over and over again. Fossil fuels cannot. They are burnt once. As such fossil system requires over 300 times more material than the renewable system.
So I know the climate bill is an important political step, but this 👇 is the news today that is most exciting me and will absolutely accelerate the energy transition and climate action.

Despite what many (uniformed) commentators say, the biggest use of gas in Europe is for heating buildings (water & space) not for power (though that is second). See @laurimyllyvirta's great thread for a graph on this 👇

1. The age of cheap gas in Australia is over. @SantosLtd, @tony_r_wood, Andrew Liveris, @Matt_KeanMP, @barobertson111, Zoe Whitton agree, we will never have gas on cost parity with the US (~$4/GJ).
2. Batteries are going gang busters in Australia. There are four utility scale (BIG) batteries operating in SA, with 2 more in construction and that is where the finance sector is putting their $$. A good new report from @cleannrgcouncil today on this.
1/ This is a pretty good analysis of the NSW Government's excellent Energy Infrastructure Roadmap by @tanelsonaus and @joelgilmore.
But TBH I'm a bit tired of folks saying - this policy is good but really a carbon price would be much better.
theconversation.com/nsw-has-joined…2/ I get it, I get the economics. A carbon price is an incredibly powerful and efficient policy. But carbon pricing also isn't perfect.
Eg a carbon price does not encourage RE projects to do good community engagement & benefit sharing for local communities - the NSW policy does

1. Two elections (Federal & NSW) where renewables and climate are squarely on the agenda. I hope to see some of our NSW & Federal Politicians adopt these Big 5 ideas to end the energy wars bit.ly/2BoV9m9. This would mean actual political leadership finally!
