It is a great ill that befalls the Left when it frames the UK as some progressive institution. This is pure dogma. It is clear that so many of the British Left are content to merely occupy the structures of power rather than dismatle the cause of inequality.

The Tories represent two clear strands; Capital and Social Conservativism. They also represent a political tradition that stretches back through the centuries when the UK was forged on the basis of class hegemony of capital and imperial expansion.

2/
While the empire may be gone and we be no colony there exists a structure which has clear parallels. That is the core-periphery econo-political model that describes the centralized British State. I believe this👇can be scaled to the British State

I've been pro #indyWales for more than 30 years. I've always favoured progressive liberal policies. Over the years I've come to see how class & entrenched priviledge forged the UK as a political entity and continues to perpetuate inequality day in, day out.

2. I should be a natural Labour man. But I'm not. I first voted in 1997. I voted @Plaid_Cymru and have done ever since. Why? Because Labour kept telling me my being Welsh didn't matter. Being British was better. Voting Labour was supposed to be THE bulwark against Toryism.

2/
But I saw Labour people hostile to my language, who called me backward because I thought it mattered. I saw Kinnock drag the history of my people through the mud. I saw Blair abandoning Labour principles I actually thought worthy and sell out to American Neo-Cons.

1. For those wondering about this whole "England subsidises Wales" rubbish doing the rounds recently ... a thread👇
2. There is a deficit attributed between government spending and revenues in Wales.

It's not Wales' deficit. It's an estimate for the internal accounting of the UK state. It's the deficit of UK state spending and revenue attributed to Wales.

3. I repeat, it is not our deficit. How can it be? We don't have significant borrowing powers. We don't have significant powers over taxation. The Welsh Government budget is decided via the Barnett formula according to England's spending plans.

I have not, until now, commented on @SimonCalder's suggestion that #Wales is a great place for a half term holiday. Given, however, that he's thrown a tantrum and said he'll never come to Wales again because he suffered some "abuse" on Twitter, here goes... /2

2/ Two thirds of Wales is in local lockdown. Until August, Wales had much more stringent lockdown restrictions and a much lower incidence of coronavirus. Unfortunately, we had to open up too soon so that English people could go on holiday and visit their second homes. /3
3/ Then, trying to limit the renewed increase in cases of #covid19 by imposing local lockdowns, @fmwales wrote to @BorisJohnson to ask him to impose a restriction on people living in areas where there was a higher incidence of cases than in Wales from coming to Wales. /4

The Hebrides and the Highlands🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 are currently enduring the same fates as Ynys Môn, Gwyr, Ceredigion, Gwynedd and other places. 2nd holiday homes displace residents+ makes buying a home unaffordable for local people. The Union🇬🇧 isn't working. It's never worked. #annibyniaeth🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿
What do gentrification and second holiday homes have in common? Both identify a community, move in, drive up house prices, render it unaffordable for local people [usually younger people] and displaces residents, usually breaking intergenerational ties to communities
At their heart, gentrification+second holiday homes function as parasites that systemically dismantle the communities within which they find themselves. Both need outsiders who benefit from economic precarity and labour market dynamics in a greater economic freedom to buy

We LOVED this piece published by @galdemzine
on the #independence campaign in #Scotland called "Is support growing for a radical, anti-racist independent #Scotland🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿?"

It is absolutely integral that discourses open up on conversations like this- independence is a crucial issue in Scotland in Wales. However, most conversations refuse to look at topics like racism, anti racism, state violence, incarceration, and failures of devolution for PoC
"A poll by Awaz FM, Scotland’s leading Asian radio, showed that 64% of listeners were intending to vote Yes. There is a collective voice emerging from Scotland’s PoC, and its support for independence is becoming increasingly clear."

We need info on this in #Wales, too!

We are a group of people of colour who are supportive of #YesCymru and discussions in #Wales🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 for #independence/#annibyniaeth.

We have created YesCymruPOC to adequately address topics of equality, representation, diversity and race in the #Welsh independence movement. 1/
Wales🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 has a future beyond an unequal relationship in the Union🇬🇧, one that is based on exploitation, poverty and a lack of a developed public political sphere in Wales. 2/
Equally, we acknowledge the monolithic discussions on #independence/#annibyniaeth🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 that have, at nearly every turn, erased the voices+contributions of #PeopleofColour in #Wales and the lived realities of race, racism and the #HostileEnvironment.
