My latest @locusmag column is "The Swivel-Eyed Loons Have A Point," about all the ways that I agree with the Right's paranoid fringe, whom I mostly *disagree* with:

The impetus for the article was a widely reported, bizarre protest against the plan to create a #15MinuteCity in Oxford, England.

I take a weird, uneasy comfort in jokes about us living in "the stupidest timeline," a terrible final season of a flailing TV series whose hacky writers' room is throwing a torrent of rubbish into storyline in the vain hope that it will recapture the public's interest.

It's one of the ways I manage to contemplate #cumgate - one of the stupidest scandals of the UK's Boris Johnson administration (which is really saying something) without wanting to crawl under the duvet and rock back and forth.

The thing about hacky writers' rooms is that they can inspire superb rants from outraged viewers who are agog at the stupidity of it all. It turns out that these rants are even MORE cathartic when directed at high-stakes, real world idiocy.

Dominic Cummings is the UK prime minister's appointed advisor whose duties included establishing the quarantine rules he spectacularly violated AFTER he believed he had been exposed to coronavirus.

The scandal - #cumgate - is NOT trending on Twitter, despite its dominance of UK politics and the real possibility that it could take down the current government.

Why not? Because Twitter's porn-filters block the word "cum" from trending topics.

People who try to type Cumgate-related hashtags get autocomplete suggestions like "#cummnings, #dominiccummigs and #sackcummimgs". These suggestions have been chose often enough that THEY have started to trend.

Below is a graph of the inward tweets to five British journalists, @piersmorgan @bbclaurak @peston @adamboultonSKY @BethRigby on the "media scum" hashtag yesterday. Between 3 and 5pm UTC, just five of them received hundreds of tweets tagged "media scum". This is cyberharassment
These attacks can amount to what might be called by @RSF_inter as "press freedom predators" - who generally operate according to the following criteria. [And it's not just the right that do this, although the analysis above is mostly right-wing accounts]
@DrPicornell asked if we can identify top predators. We can, to an extent.Within my sample, we can see which accounts sent the most replies and mentions to the aforementioned journalists. Top 5 include @davcol1 @hickeyatwork @bankersreform @Coupdtat4 @DADickinson62 [Includes RTS]

With ruling elites making such a lethal mess of things, the pandemic is a kind of make-or-break for political satire - how to top powerful peoples' self-lampooning conduct without seeming callous or broad?

Enter @Scarfolk.

Scarfolk is a fictional English horror-town set in a looping 1970s, in which Thacherism rises and rises and rises. Today, Scarfolk tackles #cumgate, in which Dominic Cummings, advisor to the UK Prime Minister and architect of the lockdown, flagrantly flouted his own rules.

2/
Scarfolk's "Government Employee Eye-Test Slide" nails the law-and-order Tories' incredible leaps of logic that forgave Cummings conduct even as everyday people are enduring privation and violence to follow the rules.

Obviously the government now regard #CumGate as closed and are going to stop answering questions on this. So I want to make 100% sure I understand what they are saying has happened.

#Cummings’ wife fell ill with suspected covid so understandably he felt it best to return to work. Later that day, he grew concerned he & his wife would become so ill they would no longer be able to look after each other or their son, & returned home.
But he wasn’t able have himself and his family tested, as other government bigwigs had done. So Cummings reasoned his wife definitely maybe had covid (despite not having symptoms) and if she definitely maybe had covid, he could definitely maybe have it to.

[Thread]1/ The hashtag "Scum Media" is trending in the UK as some people rally to defend #DominicCummings. With democracy constantly under attack, it's important to understand attacks on our media. I downloaded around 19000 tweets from 7030 accounts. Some findings 👉 #CumGate
2/ The network graph shows those tweeting on the hashtag, coloured by different clusters who interact with each other. In this iteration, the size of node represents the inward traffic on Twitter (e.g. is it being retweeted a lot, or replied to a lot). This usually includes two
3/ groups of people - 1) anyone tweeting the hashtag and being retweeted (whether for or against) 2) and those being harassed using the hashtag. @PiersMorgan comes out for someone being targeted a lot with abuse. Morgan has been, perhaps surprisingly, very critical of Cummings

I’d like to point out how the tactics that are currently employed by Boris Johnson and Dominic Cummings are those used by narcissistic abusers and how they are used to coercively control the public into believing them - a thread

gaslighting: This is when someone repeatedly replaces facts with falsehoods. They will repeat their story until you are convinced. They will recruit others to do this to ensure the message they have fed you is the same. These are sock puppets or flying monkeys.
Projection: They can’t accept their mistakes and so it must be someone else’s - look at the way the media is being blamed as well as the ambiguous guidance.

Can someone tell me which car can drive 520 miles without the driver needing to touch a petrol pump, because I want it!
#DominicCummings #CumGate
It's my understanding that Cummings drives a range rover. So while it's been fun watching the literally thousands of comments suggesting more fuel-efficient cars...
Also, for any of your arguments to work, his car would need to be already basically dripping with petrol the moment he realised his wife had symptoms.
And why would it? Unless he was planning a trip?🤔😅
Honestly I'm just messing. This is nothing compared to his blind test drive.
