Thread: I don’t share a lot of re: my work on SM, but I am proud of the work my district’s Spanish teachers did and are continuing to do around our new adoption & additional opportunities I’m facilitating this year for my district world language teachers. 1/16 #langchat @NADSFL
2/ A representative team of middle and high school teachers piloted three programs and evaluated each along our key indicators. Students and community provided input as well. A consensus process was used to select the materials that would be recommended.
3/ As part of our recommendation, I successfully advocated for technology for every classroom so that teachers and students would have dedicated, consistent access to practice and assessment resources in all modes of communication.

Mi gente, #langchat #educolor #earlylang it’s going to look like I’m subtweeting but I’m not. I’m writing this tweet to create awareness yet again about the importance of names. There are many excellent orgs out there that are interested in my work yet they still misspell my name
Yes, I’m Latina. Yes, I’m Chilean. Yes, my name is French. You know, there’s this thing called #immigration and my great grandfather happened to partake in it during the early 1900s. My name is French and my last name is too because of my heritage #langchat #earlylang #educolor
I know a lot of people likes to call me Fran because Françoise sounds intimidating 👀 and for the most part I’m ok with it as long as it doesn’t sound anglicized. Now, when talking about me because I am presenting for u or you’re quoting my work, you must write my name correctly.

Mi gente, I am reposting myself because I have already been asked and seen posts from WL teachers talking about #blackhistorymonth and I have been asked if I have created a unit or resources.

So #langchat
I want to make myself clear here. I don’t believe the history of accomplishments of BIPOC or any minoritized community should be relegated to a month. I believe the 🇺🇸 school calendar - the timeline in history books have been designed to do so #langchat #BlackHistoryMonth
It exalts the accomplishments and heroicity of yt men and it has been peppered with months dedicated to other communities for the sake of shallow multiculturality. Tokenism at its best #langchat #BlackHistoryMonth

🚨 Very happy to share this *new* pub, which began as a collection of sketches & questions in my notebook more than 5 yrs ago now! I hope this will be helpful as we continue to work together to articulate what Trans French Studies & what trans-affirming ALx can look like [1/6] Subverting the Culturally U...
I also hope this work will be helpful in (re)centering the voices of non-binary people as we think about & write through the ways that we position ourselves within and against myriad culturally and linguistically situated understandings of gender, particularly in French. [2/6]
Full citation: Knisely, K. (2020). Subverting the culturally unreadable: Understanding the self-positioning of non-binary speakers of French. The French Review. 94(2), 149-168.

For those w/out institutional access, I have also written an OASIS summary: Knisely, K. (2020). [3/6]

Reminder of what sts CAN do in TL to show intercultural competence w/in a task. Novice -identify products & practices. Int: make comparisons. Adv: explain perspectives #teach4ic #nflcvirtualsummit #langchat 2/ Image
Set your interpersonal task within the language function of what you want sts to be able to do. Love how this shows interpersonal functions building & expanding throughout the proficiency levels #langchat #nflcvirtualsummit 3/ Image

I missed this facebook live conversation between powerhouses @PRHSspanish & @BobPatrick earlier today--I just caught the tail-end as you all were finishing up.

So I'll use this space to live-comment as I would have if I had been there? Does that work? Let's try!
#langchat
around 9:25 Bob mentions a problematic representation in a Latin textbook, but won't name the textbook bc he "doesn't want to bash any books" and I'm wondering about his choice to characterize the naming of sources w/problematic themes or stereotypes as "bashing" them.

At 11:55: The question is "do content creators owe us a constant stream of revisions?"

I find the way this question is posited to be very interesting as well. There's a difference between feedback based on teachers' preferences, and criticism based on racist tropes & stereotypes

While diversifying our #FVR #CI readers let’s remember-white people writing “diverse” characters isn’t the answer.

In “Tears We Cannot Stop” Dr. Dyson details how white writers appropriate the culture and stories of POC.

I think his comments apply to us.

#WLbookaudit
White writers often “fail to see how other cultures—their people, their ideas, their identities—have always been treated as only fiction, have always been looted of their inherent value and forced to fit in to the schemes, worldviews, or novels of folk”
#langchat
#WLbookaudit
“...especially white folk... invested in denying their own privilege and power to treat these other cultures just as they pleased.”

Like when #FVR novels drip w/White Gaze. When #CI readers mine other cultures for their most violent, sensational stories.

I understand the calls to extend grace, to be gentle with folx who are early on in this journey.

But there’s a difference between extending grace and letting folx off the hook.

If you’re conflating criticism with personal attacks, you ought to dig deeper.

Friends and colleagues, a good friend shared some tips for schooling from home I think are deserving of a wide audience.
If you have school aged children, you’ll find this helpful: 1/ #COVID19WL #Langchat
“I started unexpectedly homeschooling one of our children last fall. Since almost everyone else is suddenly in the same boat now, a couple of recommendations. These have worked well for us. I can't promise they'll all fit your family... but just in case some are helpful: 2/
“1. Don't suddenly change your home routine today. What would you be doing on a normal day off school? For today, that's enough. Taking some time to allow the huge change to sink in is enough for now. Bake something together. Watch a movie together. 3/

If learning is ongoing, then Twitter chats are great ways to tell a story. #nt2t
As my co-mod @seni_bl would say, every week, a new chapter. If that is the case, how many chapters does #nt2t already have since it came to life in 2013? 🤔

I was inspired by this graphic to start tracking the books I read and use in my Spanish classroom. I want to invite other World Language teachers to join me! I'll be using the hashtag #WLBookAudit to share what I learn. #langchat

Here's a thread of what I've done so far. Diversity in children's books 2018. Children of various racial makeups standing in front of mirrors to represent how many books feature characters who look like them. White, 50%; Animals 27%, African/African American 10%; Asian Pacific Islander 7%, Latinx 5%, American Indians 1%.
First, if you haven't read the article that accompanies the infographic, I highly recommend it. But one important update is this version uses broken mirrors to "illustrate the continued misrepresentation of the underrepresented communities"
Knowing how often underrepresented communities are misrepresented in literature, I make a conscious effort to include as many books #ownvoices authors as I can find. In WL circles we often call these #authres, although that term can be problematic(that's for another convo though)

Welcome to this week's live tweet! Today, we revisit our articles from last week (thread here: ) This week, we have special guest faculty member Professor James Uden. @i_nurmi opens the discussion by returning to a critical question: why Latin and Greek?
Though last week's discussion was fruitful and evocative, @i_nurmi points out that we skirted around and didn't really arrive at the ultimate question of why these classes are important, and how we convince our students these are important.
A big problem here is the perception of Latin as a "prestige language." A cohort mentions a panel at CANE last year with pushback against Latin as ID'd as "prestige Latin"; one panel speaker gave e.g. of students finding value in the language *because* of this identity...

Welcome to Hestia's weekly live tweet! This week's discussion, led by @ala_Camillae, will look into @IndwellingLang 's @eidolon_journal article "Teaching Latin to Humans," as well as @MagisterBracey 's "Why Students of Color Don't Take Latin." #langchat #teachancient
We begin with discussion on Bracey's article. @ala_Camillae notes that both articles come from the school of thought of Comprehensible Input (CI) and Second Language Acquisition (SLA).
