Belgium is a single dark red spot on the map of the EU infection control authority. The number of reported corona infections in the past two weeks was 139 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
In the European Union the country belongs to the top group; only Spain, the Czech Republic, France, Luxembourg and Malta have even higher values. But while protective measures are being ramped up again in many countries, Belgium, with its 11.5 million inhabitants,
is taking an unusual path: it is easing the restrictions again. "Our country is moving from crisis management to risk management," said incumbent Prime Minister Sophie Wilmès after a meeting of the National Security Council.

In protest against the actions of the politicians in the Corona crisis, several scientists are going on a "silent strike" in Belgium. The prominent virologist Marc van Ranst and some colleagues did not want to give interviews this weekend,
reported the Belgian broadcaster VRT. The scientists complain that the politicians too often hid behind them and refused to give interviews on corona politics. According to the VRT, Van Ranst expressly emphasized that the protest was not directed against the media.
Rather, it is a signal to politics. The silence should be over on Monday. Belgium has been hit relatively hard by the coronavirus. According to the authorities, around 150 infected people per 100,000 inhabitants were counted in the past two weeks.

According to the EU Council Secretariat, the participants at the EU summit next week do not have to show a negative corona test. "According to Belgian safety regulations, it is not necessary to present a negative test before entering the country,"
a spokeswoman said on request. This differs from the German regulation, according to which participants from risk areas at EU meetings in Germany - including ministers and commissioners - have to present a negative test.
However, delegation members with symptoms will not be allowed entry, says the spokeswoman. In addition, the size of the delegations of the 27 EU governments is limited, the hygiene regulations such as distance and masks would apply in the EU Council building.

Despite the high number of Corona cases, Belgium is loosening the mask requirement in public places. From October 1, mouth and nose protection outdoors will no longer be mandatory everywhere, said Prime Minister Sophie Wilmès on Wednesday.
However, it is strongly recommended to continue to use it in particularly busy or narrow spaces. Everyone has to wear a mask on buses and trains, in shops and cinemas.
Also on October 1, the quarantine obligation in suspected corona cases is to be shortened to seven days, Wilmès said.

Hungary and Sweden have now also agreed to set up depots on behalf of all EU countries, said EU Commissioner Janez Lenarcic. The construction of the joint reserve began in the spring when many countries had far too little protective equipment for doctors and nurses.
From this reserve 520,000 medical FFP2 and FFP3 masks have now been distributed to the EU states Italy, Spain, Croatia and Lithuania as well as to the neighbors North Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia, said Lenarcic. The stocks are financed from the EU's Community budget.

In light of the human rights violations in Belarus, the EU continues to argue about sanctions against the regime in Minsk.
It is true that the foreign ministers of the member states had already decided in principle punitive measures against those responsible. There is now a list of 40 people who are to be blocked from entering the country and blocked from their accounts.
But EU member Cyprus is blocking the unanimous decision needed to put the sanctions into effect. "Our reaction to violations of our core values and principles cannot be à la carte, it has to be consistent,"

The EU countries are making progress in efforts to better coordinate travel restrictions. As can be seen from a progress report of the current German EU Council Presidency,
there is great support for the proposal to commission the EU health agency ECDC with the development of a common database on the occurrence of infections. In addition, the public should be warned at least 24 hours before new measures come into force. However,
common criteria for the introduction of travel restrictions are still in sight, as are uniform rules for travel to risk areas. The discussions about a joint risk assessment and possible joint measures are sensitive, according to the report,

From the point of view of the EU Commission, corona tests should not take longer than 24 hours from the first request to the result so that contacts can be meaningfully tracked.
The Brussels authority presented its recommendations for a joint test strategy to the EU states. Germany would also have to speed up. According to the commission, up to 36 hours pass between the test and the announcement of the result.
The commission emphasizes that the population should have easy access to test sites. It must be a priority to test all cases of Covid-19-like symptoms. If possible, the coronavirus, flu and other respiratory infections should be checked at the same time.

We hear more and more that one way to defuse the #Karlsruhe#Luxembourg#Frankfurt conflict is to travel via #Berlin:

Let @bundesbank be more *accountable* to @Bundestag

Here's a few things we know about the promises and pitfalls of that strategy

The ECB has a Monetary Dialogue with @EP_Economics in #Brussels & it answers written questions by MEPs

Many see the Dialogue as a talking shop, but it does offer a template

I've been cautiously optimistic about it in the last crisis(as have MEPs)...

...but there's no denying that @ecb accountability could and should be strengthened

For one, it hinges on the focus and specialization of the parliamentarians who hold the central bank to account, and on the willingness of central bankers to engage in meaningful exchange

A little thread about today #climatestrike in #brussels
Awfully rainy. Fresh. Virus threat.
Still a few thousand people joining . A mix of old militants and young people.
Talked with a few young people and asked them why so few came.
They answered they either don't care or
think the fight is lost ,or not winnable.
Seems we need to go to #Instagram to reach them.
How to talk about methane on IM? i don't know .
Will #Greta manage to lift the energy of 1 billion young people? it's so much to ask from 1 person.
I fear we are losing the battle.
If politicians don't react soon, the bond between generations will disappear.
There's really a deluge of risks and problems facing us and around us.
If americans pick #trump or #biden, then hope will be gone.
What will be left?
I am heartbroken. We need to turn the tide.

NEW: The UK publishes its approach to negotiating the future #UK - #EU relationship… UK already saying that it wants a "Canada", "Korea" or "Japan" style relationship and wants to be seen as a "sovereign equal". None of this likely to fly anywhere...
Here is the document itself with some key bits highlighted (thread)…
Point 5: "relationship between sovereign equals" is - although UK Gov entitled to say this - delusional. #UK much smaller than #EU and more exposed to EU economically than vice-versa. Sovereignty argument coming through strongly here.

Det är svårt att föreställa sig om det som sker i Kina. Uppenbarligen samlar de in dissidenter.

On the EU's #FarmToFork strategy, it is clear that for one thing, we need to "gradually move towards a 'real costs' approach to prices". What does this mean? 👇
