🧵 1/4 Many of you will have seen articles recently with @wlrfm @WaterfordNS @KKPeopleNews on the future of the Barrow Bridge on the #Wexford to #Waterford rail line. @IrishRail have announced that the bridge will be pinned open due to a ship collision in Feb 2022
2/4 The bridge is an engineering marvel (almost 1/2 a mile long) that has functioned since 1906 - this video from @tidesntales gives you an idea of its scale and the opening & closing mechanism Several trains crossed the bridge in 2022 (after the accident) ImageImage
3/4 @IrishRail stated they will commence repair work on the bridge once compensation has been received from the ship's insurer. However, this has happened before. In 1991 a similar bridge strike occurred. The matter was with the High Court until 2001! A full decade! Image

#Irish artist, Sarah Purser (1848 - 1943) was born #OnThisDay 173 years ago. Her family was prosperous with a background in brewing. Shortly after her birth, her father Benjamin decided to move the family from #Dublin south to Dungarvan in #Waterford

2) Sarah would go to finishing school in #Switzerland where she learned to speak French and began painting. On her return to #Ireland she enrolled in the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art and would go on to attend the Académie Julian in #Paris Image
3) In the early 1870s Benjamin’s businesses collapsed and Sarah now had to rely on her ability to generate income from art commissions. While she did some landscape and genre painting, portraiture appeared to be her metier

In the early part of the first millennium CE, the #IndoEuropean language known as Proto-#Germanic diverged into an East branch (which included #Gothic) and a Northwest branch.

Northwest then split into West and North branches when Proto-#Norse developed in #Scandinavia. Image
Until the 8th century, #Germanic #languages, including Proto-#Norse, were written in Elder Futhark, the earliest #runic #alphabet.

The name #Futhark comes from the initial phonemes in the names of the first six #runes:
ᚠ ᚢ ᚦ ᚨ ᚱ ᚲ

By the beginning of the #Viking Age around 800 CE, Proto-#Norse had evolved into Old Norse, and #Scandinavia's writing system transitioned from the 24 #runes of Elder #Futhark to Younger Futhark's 16 runes.

The #Swedish #Sparlösa #Runestone from ~800 CE features both #alphabets. Image

For the past few days I have been mentioning here that it's an Irish company that is hosting Gemma O'Doherty's Anti-Corruption Ireland website. Here's a thread about the private dialogue I have had with this company.
In the aftermath of the hateful events in New Zealand last week, I was delighted to learn that @MaritimeBantry had decided not to allow their hotel to be used as a platform for the hate and misinfo peddled by ACI.
It then struck me (probably should have sooner given I'm a web developer) that those providing the group with web hosting were also providing a platform to allow the group to grow and recruit.
