@fhirinn @GourlaySusan @Effiedeans Where to start?

An inclusive, highly educated society of social equals, welcoming inward migration to address Scotland’s demographic issues in areas of social care, health and education and driving a thriving, knowledge-based and export-led economy. 1/30
@fhirinn @GourlaySusan @Effiedeans This environment, coupled with the the resumption of EU membership, could indeed attract a boost in foreign investment. Leaving the UK would bring freedom from ‘big-state spending’ on issues like defence, or on a large, national infrastructure and a global presence. 2/30
@fhirinn @GourlaySusan @Effiedeans Instead of the London centric and recent often corrupt spending of public finances in a non-transparent manner, where public tender for contracts for spending of public monies is built on cronyism, an Independent Scotland can lead the way in a more transparent way 3/30

Well, urged on by the PM on Channel 4 news, I took a quick look at 'their websites'. And they're scary places, let me tell you. First tho, there's a lovely video that tells you how exciting leaving the EU is going to be, with smiley people going over their residency applications
while exporters are told of the new 'approach to trade'. Oh, ok then, 'approach' doesn't sound so bad. But then you click the Start button in the Take Action section and you enter the Brexit horrorshow. Here's a summary of my own little Brexit nightmare to come >>
Check if you need to change your contract to keep accessing personal data from the EU, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein: You may not be able to access personal data from the EU without the right arrangements in place. >>

THREAD: Ok, let’s see if I got this right. In 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 the sqa system downgrades exam results. Teachers and pupils are distraught and protest. Although there was already in existence a FREE appeal process the @scotgov take seriously the concerns and look more closely 1/5
They decide that it probably wasn’t the best system and the @ScotGovFM stands up and publicly acknowledges this, speaking directly to the young people affected. The education minister @JohnSwinney acknowledges, apologises and rectifies it in a way that seems to work for most 2/5
As far as I know most teachers and pupils accept this and appreciate it (obviously anecdotal). Then labour Tories and lib dems (the unionist parties) say how terrible and instigate a vote of no confidence in @JohnSwinney. Then English and Welsh results come out. 3/5

Why 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿's law don't gel with 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿's, hence the #TreatyOfUnion demanding our laws remain separate. This letter was written in as a huge debate on English Courts taking jurisdiction over Scottish one's was in progress due to Orr Vs Ewing inheritance case.

From the Xmas edition of the 'Scotsman', 1883. Our lawyer and correspondent extraordinaire, Thistledown, makes the implications of an #EnglishUsurpation of #ScottishLaw clear.

From the same Xmas edition of the 'Scotsman' we have a fan of Thistledown's, I believe he probably had many at this point (he can count me in), making the distinction between 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 & 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 clear.

@BCCletts I know this one 😉

Articles from the 1850-1875 group & as cited below each quote and passage from James Grant's 'Old and New Edinburgh' (1880), vol. 1, Chapter 17.

@BCCletts So technically Scotland was paid £100,000 to take on a share of England's £20m debt - & that's not what the debt would translate as now - literally £20m worth of debt as of 1707.

Scottish independence : letter on the necessity of dissolving the union between England and Scotland, and on restoring Scotland to her ancient supremacy as an entire and distinct nation.

Published 1845. Written 1844 by John Steill, who paid for this statue of Wallace.

"The union between Scotland and England one of the blackest transactions in history....."

"...when England had a purpose of her own to serve, however prejudicial it might be to her weaker neighbour, no obstacle would be allowed to stand in the way of its attainment."

"the voice of our Scottish members, in the misnamed British Senate, is drowned amidst the tumultuous clamours of iron-hearted tories, bloated corruptionists, and hordes of other venal creatures, who have been sent by the..... constituencies of England...."

British Nationalists never explain why the people of Scotland should put their faith in a British regime which has exhibited such woeful incompetence, mindless recklessness, brazen dishonesty and blatant contempt for our democratic institutions. #DissolveTheUnion
They never explain why Scotland should not seek solutions tailored to our circumstances and informed by the needs, priorities and aspirations of Scotland’s people. #DissolveTheUnion
They never explain why Scotland’s economic, social and political welfare must always be sacrificed for the sake of preserving the structures of power, privilege and patronage which define the British state. #DissolveTheUnion

Interesting sample of #DissolveTheUnion over the past week, as highlighted by @jennifermjones.

10k tweets, from just over 2k users. Average: 4.9 tweets / user.

In spontaneous traffic, the average is usually below 2.2. Higher usually shows bots or coordinated action.
Here's why. The ten most active accounts contributed 2,247 tweets. Almost a quarter of the total sample.

Oh, and 11,534 hashtags.
Almost 75% of the posts were retweets.

That's close to the upper edge of the normal range you'd see for spontaneous traffic, but not wildly off the scale.

One of the great fallacies of the independence movement is the notion that people may be persuaded by 'factual' economic arguments, even supposing such a thing could be contrived. #DissolveTheUnion
The truth is that, long before a person arrives at any discussion of economic factors, their position has been firmly established on the basis of ideology, identity, partisan loyalty etc. #DissolveTheUnion
People who have already made up their minds about a social or constitutional issue turn to economists for algebraic affirmation and the confidence that comes from having assumptions, preconceptions and prejudices papered over with graphs and charts. #DissolveTheUnion

Remember the four elements of the independence movement. The SNP is the lever by which Scotland will be extricated from the Union.
The fulcrum on which the lever if the SNP turns is the First Minister and the Scottish Government.
The Scottish Parliament is the solid base on which the fulcrum rests.

It is not reasonable for the Yes movement to suppose the the 'right time' for a new referendum is something which might simply emerge from conditions determined almost entirely by those most bitterly opposed to the very idea. #Referendum2018 #DissolveTheUnion
The 'right time'for a new referendum is something which must be created by the Yes movement. The practicalities of this task remain the same regardless of when the referendum is declared or held. #Referendum2018 #DissolveTheUnion
Only the circumstances in which the referendum is declared and held change over time. It is reasonable to suppose that, while those circumstances are determined by the British state, they will only become less favourable. #Referendum2018 #DissolveTheUnion
