Today we got out in the streets. And I gotta say it’s pretty shocking to me how much people hate protest. Anyways it’s the 10th anniversary of #RanaPlaza and if you don’t know please read up about what happened there. 1134 innocent lives lost.

I stuck a fake London Blue Plaque on the window of Primark’s greenwashing scheme. Whoever came up with the blue plaque’s is a genius.

Reminder: Primark still cannot guarantee they pay fair wages to the people who make their clothes.

The day ended with reading the names of all 1134 victims in front of Primark (yup they were involved). It was really somber. All those people just trying to do good honest work.

Why are audits are ineffective tools for detecting reporting & correcting environmental & labor violations in #fashion supply chains? A thread/1
Most brands design audit programs that only inspect Tier 1 suppliers, where the final assembly of products takes place. This means, subcontracted units or other tiers in garment production (dyeing, spinning, etc), where working conditions are worse - are not included in audits./2
Many #fashion brands, themselves design audit programs. This means they determine how audits are conducted when they should be conducted, which factories must be part of it, or even which agencies must to involved in it.3

Good to see so much reporting on #fastfashion production in #leicester including investigative reporting - undercover Sunday times journalist who was hired in factory on Thursday. This moment has been a long time coming..../1
Former MP for Wakefield @MaryCreaghMP led an Environmental Audit Committee investigation into #fastfashion two years ago. I was one of the experts who gave evidence. Her subsequent report #fixingfashion is worth a read. Every recommendation was rejected by the government /2
Meanwhile @boohoo sent a resounding ‘fuck off’ in the form of refusing to appear or answer questions. clear that we now had a UK brand/retailer that would not be answerable. Report rejection gave green light to go for it, increase profits with no checks & balances. /3

1/3 The Rana Plaza tragedy 7 years ago resulted in the death of 1,134 factory workers. This shed a global spotlight on the cruel and unbelievable treatment of supply chain workers, which could only be described as modern day slavery. #RanaPlazaNeverAgain bit.ly/2Kruskg
2/3 In the wake of #RanaPlaza, a global campaign #WhoMadeMyClothes started a movement to push for transparency in the fashion supply chain. But according to the @Fash_Rev annual transparency index, fashion brands have a long way to go in improving its policies and practices. Image
3/3 The fashion industry is at another turning point amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, and we must continue to demand that the industry is transparent, and make goals to protect workers and the planet. vogue.co.uk/arts-and-lifes…
