BREAKING: @HSBC just announced that it will stop financing any new oil and gas fields! This is HUGE.

Now @RBC should follow its lead, stop financing fossil fuels, and #DefundClimateChaos 🧵 Image @HSBC @RBC @decolonialsol @350Canada @CANRacCanada @leadnowca @GreenpeaceCA @Tzeporah @Indigenous_ca @ecojustice_ca @Gidimten HSBC is the first of the major global banks to announce this phaseout. Now, all the other banks can see that it's possible to choose to stop funding new fossil fuel fields.

There's no excuse for other major fossil fuel financiers like @RBC

.@RBC has invested more than 9.22 billion dollars in fossil fuels since joining the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ)

Net zero means no new fossil fuel investments. 1/ 🧵
stand.earth/resources/roya… @RBC .@RBC 's 9.22 Billion in fossil fuel investments since Oct 2021 would cover 25% of disaster relief costs in Pakistan, as millions recover from devastating flooding.
Instead of investing in climate devastation & displacement, RBC could support communities impacted by fossil fuels.

Ever heard that Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is a climate-friendly fuel? Well, you’ve been sold a lie. LNG, made up of methane, is one of the fastest growing threats to our climate. RT to expose the truth about #LNG. #bcpoli #cdnpoli Didn't think we'd need to say this, but the responses we're getting on this tweet really prove our point: the fossil fuel industry has done a great job convincing the public that "natural gas" is good. It's not. Read more here: vox.com/energy-and-env…

The BC government announced a stimulus package today containing less than half the recommended funds to address climate change.

The west coast is burning. BC is choking on smoke. Maybe we should listen to the science on climate change? 🙃 #bcpoli
stand.earth/latest/Canada-… “I am disappointed that Premier @jjhorgan would ignore the recommendations of their own handpicked advisory body on climate.” - @Tzeporah

The Climate Solutions Council recommended at least $500M be committed to climate mitigation and adaptation. BC fell far short, under 50%.

Today an explosive new report on old growth recommended immediate logging deferrals for the most at-risk old forests across BC. So far, the BC government’s response has left most of those areas on the chopping block.

Our full release: stand.earth/latest/forest-… BC has yet more evidence for the need to defend old forests, and a clear path for next steps. Today’s announcement from the province shows they have a ways to go before we can be sure they are adhering to those recommendations. We need more deferrals for at-risk old growth, ASAP.

We still have a chance to defend old growth forests in BC. But barely.

There are only about 415,000 hectares of old forest remaining where you can find large trees. To put that in perspective, that’s less than 1% of forests in the entire province.

The majority are unprotected. Image Our communities depend on these old forests staying standing. Healthy forests provide clean air, drinking water, and mitigate flooding & fires. They also store massive amounts of carbon and are more resilient to climate change. That’s top of mind with so much smoke in the air.

#BREAKING new research reveals that the majority of productive old growth forests in BC are gone, and most of what’s left is slated to be logged. stand.earth/latest/forest-… The provincial government claims that there are 13.2 million hectares of old-growth forest in B.C.

But independent analysis shows that only about 400,000 hectares of old forest can support the growth of large trees. Of that, about 75% is slated to be logged.

📣On Jan 1st, a huge new international law came into effect, essentially ending the use of high-sulfur heavy fuel oil in shipping. *But ships are still bypassing the law with ‘emissions cheat systems’ - aka ‘scrubbers’.* 2. This new law from @IMOHQ should have an enormous impact on the shipping industry, as most ships still burn one of the dirtiest fuels on earth. But ships can cheat the system by installing ‘scrubbers,’ and keep using heavy fuel oil through a big loophole in the law.
