Further to this #popup #cycling #sustainability #zerocarbon #worldcyclingday might appear counter-intuitive that Manchester is not supportive of pop up cycle lanes. So a thread👇🚲🚴🚴‍♀️

Pop up cycle lanes have traction with the press and looks like they are also popular with (commuter) cyclists. Light segregation schemes are becoming increasingly popular in other cities on the back of the Covid19 pandemic #Cycling #Manchester

Sure they offer value for money and with being temporary, they also offer adaptability. Estimated cost of constructing a kerb-separated cycle track in central London is
approximately £700,000 per km, compared to around £60,000 per km for light segregation itf-oecd.org/sites/default/…

In Manchester, we remain absolutely committed to improving cycling infrastructure in the city. We do so with the principle that it is well designed, fully funded and permanent #cycling #cyclinglife #worldcyclingday #WorldBicycleDay

Sustainable modal shift is achieved when people feel safe and take to their bikes all year round. This is critical to making Manchester #zerocarbon and safeguard the improved #AirQuality we have seen during #lockdown #cycling #Manchester

So we have seen an increase in #activetravel in GM in the last few weeks, which is great news, is needed, welcome and needs to continue. Let's look at some figures #cycling #Manchester #worldcyclingday #WorldBicycleDay

Prior to #COVID19 pandemic, most people in the morning peak, 55%, used public transport to get to town, rising to 64% in the two hours after the morning peak. The comparative figures for walking are 13% and 13%, and for cycling 2% and 1% #cycling #manchester #WorldBicycleDay

The number of people cycling has the greatest seasonal variation with on average half the number in the winter. Given these numbers the question we face is what happens when people stop using public transport #cycling #Manchester #WorldBicycleDay

Compared to typical pre-covid week, Metrolink trips are down by 93%, 90% reduction on train, 83% reduction on bus travel. Despite massive reduction in #publictransport use, and best weather #cycling accounts 4% of trips walking accounts for 5 times more trips than cycling (19%)

There has been a welcome #cycling boom over the last couple of months, but cycling commuting journeys have gone down like every other mode as the counters on Oxford Rd indicate

The post #covid19 growth in cycling was driven by increase in cycling activity on local streets & traffic free routes eg. Rochdale canal which have seen a five fold increase in cycling. The nature of these routes/times suggest an increase in leisure trips.

The recent increase in cycling on A and B Roads and the increase in numbers during the traditional AM peak suggest that there may be an increase or return to #cycling for commuting. However we would need more data & analysis to come to conclusions.

While #cycling is an alternative for some, evidence as % share of all travel modes indicates clearly it's not going to meet the demand for travel to work that exists. Efforts must focus in getting people (safely) back to public transport, a lot of effort is going in this

The evidence points to the need for neighbourhood improvements, rather than pop up temporary cones for commuter cyclists down major routes which take capacity from public transport and don't form part of an integrated transport network #cycling #Manchester

In addition, according to our experience, light segregation devices of temporary nature raise serious safety concerns in respect to ability to protect cyclists and other vulnerable road users (remember temp wands on Sackville St?)
(and what about right turns on junctions) #cycling

There are very strict criteria for the release of #activetravel fund monies by DfT there are no easy answers, or enough resources to apply for everything that needs doing across the city. For further information on this bid look at future announcements. #cycling #walking

in addition to temp measures, we continue working with @OfficialTfGM to ensure construction for all of our currently planned #cycling & walking schemes starts by end of 2020 #WorldBicycleDay

So let's be clear £15.8m to support #activetravel needs of GM conurbation is barely a token gesture in terms of making it easier for people to walk and cycle. Need heck of a lot more to help build more active, healthier and resilient communities #BuildBackGreener & permanent

We will continue to be guided by evidence in terms of reallocating #roadspace aiming to strike the right balance between the competing demands on the highway and kerbspace #cycling #walking #socialdistancing #business #trading #pavement #zerocarbon #sustainability #activetravel
