Tuticorin Sterlite Copper plant accounts for 40 per cent of country’s copper: Will hit 800 units and jobs indianexpress.com/article/india/… | Any private run ports in south TN? I’m guessing they’d be next. Once all that is gone they’ll target PSUs. These folks are in it for the long run
Have to admit I wasn't too bothered about this case in the beginning. I'm of the believe mineral processing units should be located close to the mines or to ports close to the mines. In this case I believe Sterlite should've built this plant somewhere in Odisha
Anyway curiosity got the better of me. I started by reading 'Sterlite - here’s the proof: How the copper plant impacts health of Thoothukudi people thenewsminute.com/article/sterli… What a nonsensical piece. The whole premise was based on a 2008 report. Throw in unconnected references &
scream the 'sky is falling'. Here's a fact. Any industrial production unit will adversely impact the environment. What you can do is to ensure the plants are run efficiently & within norms. If they break it, fine them heavily
However the vicious nature of these protests reminded me of what happened in Kudankulam. So I decided to check the background of Nithyanand Jayaraman the chap who wrote the TN piece. Lo & behold he belongs to the Chennai Solidarity Group. The exact same people who organised the
Kudankulam agitations. Let us not forget before Kudankulam came online large parts of TN were suffering power blackouts. Yet these people persisted. I dug a little bit more on Nithyanand Jayaraman's background & noticed that he is a member of a NGO named 'The Other Media'
Here is the 'Organization & Governance' page of 'The Other Media' theothermedia.in/a-profile-of-t… Please look at the 'Managing Committee' & below you can see the 'Members of the General Body'
Here is what @OneFish_2Fish & I think, commodities & energy will catapult India into a developed nation. 1st step will be from low income to middle income. The cultural side effects of this will be immense political & economic clout for India & Hindus in particular
You'll see more assertive Hindus proud of their identity much like the mainland Hans. Like what you see in places like Gujarat, MP etc...This will clearly create serious discomfort among those who are in the 'scavenging' business
Specific to copper, India will see huge growth in copper consumption mainly in the telecoms & automotive industries. In fact with China, India will be a driver of global copper markets. We are also going to see huge copper consumption in the renewable industry including EVs
The race for dominance in renewable is on & its between china & the western world. A 3rd player, India, will distort the economies of scale
The church has always been a tool for imperialistic western powers. Hence, the mobilization flock to attack the copper plant. Just like Kudankulam
By the way, China has put copper as a very important commodity for their Made in China 2025 program
This protest has nothing to do with pollution but a successful attempt by foreign powers to derail the emergence of strong economic middle income India. That's really it actually. Pretty damn obvious. Thank you again @OneFish_2Fish for the great insight
A Look at how Gateway Metals and their Co-Products Underpin Modern Technology americanresources.org/new-arpn-repor… | Copper - Pages 14 to 20 @OneFish_2Fish
‘Copper is the second most widely used metal by weight in U.S. defense systems. According to a DoD study, lack of timely copper supply has already led to a significant weapons system delay’
’An MIT study found that the “risk of copper disruption is significantly greater than for the other major metals... and is at or near a historical high.’ - A US perspective. Similar situation in India
‘Next generation solar power looks to CIGS-based photovoltaic cells – where the C stands for copper and the S for selenium, 95 percent of which is derived from copper mining.’
‘Copper is often extracted in conjunction with other critical metals, like rhenium, which is used in jet fighter turbines and to formulate lead-free gas.’
’Three-quarters of global Rhenium supply comes from the copper smelting process. And copper yields 95 percent of the world’s tellurium – like selenium, key to solar power cells.’
