A few notes on the Trump administration's family separation policy.

1) It is simply *not true* that this is a continuation of Obama policy or required by law. It's an affirmative decision by Trump admin to do this.
2) They even have a name for it -- "zero tolerance" -- and Sessions, Nielsen and Kelly have repeatedly boasted about it in public settings. (The Obama policy, "family detention" was grotesque in its own way, but still far better than this)
3) We don't have precise numbers but as far as we can tell, the vast majority of children the government is ripping away from parents are coming as asylum seekers.
4) What DHS/DOJ is doing is creating a hurried, sham review process that can quickly reject the asylum claim and then they can prosecute the parents for illegal entry.
5) But here's the thing: even when the people in question clear basic review to have their asylum claims considered, *THEY STILL DON'T GET THEIR KIDS BACK*
6) That's exactly what happened in the case of the Brazilian woman seeking asylum, who is one of the plaintiffs in the ACLU case. She passed initial review, was released from custody and 8 months later, her 14 year old son IS STILL IN A DETENTION FACILITY IN CHICAGO.
7) The policy here is intentional cruelty, as a means of preventing people from coming to the US and seeking asylum. Even though asylum is protected by both US and international law.
