So many white dudes who define themselves by their identity as a programmer are so mad about this GitHub as resume thing. Like so mad.
Like I've been watching since yesterday as they spend hours of time and energy and words arguing to preserve their Temple and rituals and credentials. Making specious arguments, giving benefit of the doubt to biases left and right.
And it makes me angry. Because some of these folks are people I know. They are "the reasonable" ones. They are also the ones who claim they don't understand why people get up in arms about diversity. But this. This is what activates them. It infuriates me.
Joe McCann, who started this mess, has been cancelled. We used to be friendly. But I stopped fucking with him a long time ago, after he proved to me numerous times that he had no interest in learning or growing. He doubles down on bullshit every time.
I'm talking about the rest of y'all. The folks who watch us on here all day talking about changing this system. You offer your tepid support and we roll our eyes. Because we know you think your precious things are exempt. We see you.
You wanna hide in your repos and only talk about tech. And tell yourself we're not talking about you. We are talking about you. This is your bullshit. And you know it too. Because you show up instantly when your sacred cows are threatened.
Bro, if you find yourself arguing vehemently that the thing you love is definitely not part of the diversity problem, you need to stop. You need to breathe and take a moment to ask whether you're really here to help.
There is no hidden boogieman that's ruining diversity. It's just us. Me and you. So if I'm talking about changing things and you're talking about keeping things the same, we can take an educated guess where the status quo problem resides.
You are the status quo. Unless you wake up and decide to do something different than you did yesterday. It's you. Stop absolving yourself. Stop making excuses why your bullshit is the exception to the bullshit we're talking about. Do better.
I'm over this bullshit where you're asking what can you do. I told you. Concretely. In no uncertain terms. There's no ambiguity here. No "it depends". You have your answer on what step you can take. Today. So now what?
The single biggest saboteur baked into nerd culture is this assumption that we have no power while our decisions are literally shaping everything around us.
We think we have no impact on how candidates are filtered. When in reality it is literally based entirely on our input. The people who find candidates are reflecting what they think we want to see. There is no magic. The pipeline is a mirror on our values.
