People close to me know I will nerd out over productivity tools. There’s a reason I’ve always gravitated towards building productivity software. It’s very personal. Because everyone has their own way of feeling productive, and it’s subjective by nature. It’s very human-centric.
To me, software has always been about helping humans be better. I like technology, and I personally enjoy the activity of writing code for it’s own sake. But it’s only valuable and impactful when connected to human desires.
In that context, productivity tools also embody the ultimate promise of software as a medium for me. In some sense, software is an infinite resource. It is legitimately possible for everyone to have bespoke software that works the way that’s best *for them*.
The limits on getting the software we want are all externalities. It takes time and effort and most people don’t know how. So Thise with skills need to get paid for their effort, which introduces capitalism. And capitalism incentivizes us towards “one size fits all” software.
In the last few days, several tech companies reached out like “I’m building the thing you’ll love!” Probably not.

a) You haven’t talked to me yet and I’m a weirdo
b) You’re planning to sell it to a bunch of other people who are not me. And who knows what those weirdos want.
