So, our paper on LCDM predictions for the Radial Acceleration Relation of dwarf satellite galaxies, lead by @enreecog, was recently accepted for publication in PRL.

Not everybody seems to realize it, but working on Dark Matter alternatives such as MOND requires a lot of knowledge: you have to understand not only that theory, but also it’s more popular alternative, and the successes and challenges faced by both (or more) approaches.
None of these approaches is without issues, but we all tend to weight different lines of evidence differently. Thing is, if you don’t know much about MOND, it is easily dismissed. But that’s a quite subjective reason.
If you work on MOND, though, you are in a constant debate about its feasibility and all the evidence in favor of Dark Matter. That’s not only with colleagues, you are debating yourself all the time.

Finally read this nice preprint by Forero-Romero & Arias: arxiv.org/abs/1805.03188…
They use an interesting approach to measure the overall asphericity of the distribution of the top 11 to 15 satellites around the MW and M31, and use it to compare to cosmological simulations.
One of the paper's main finding is that the MW system is highly exceptionally flattened. Similar satellite arrangements are rare in LCDM simulations. This agrees with what I've been saying, so for me this is reassuring, though not super exciting.
Their most exciting finding is buried in the text: they report that hydrodynamical cosmological simulations result in *less* flattened satellite systems than dark-matter only sims.

So much for "baryons solve the satellite plane problem".

Paper time! I had the honor to contribute to one of the first Gaia DR2 papers, lead by Tobias Fritz, as part of the HSTPROMO collaboration including @tonysohn, @astronitya, and others. Here's a little thread of what we find.
The title already kind of says it all: "Gaia DR2 Proper Motions of Dwarf Galaxies within 420 kpc: Orbits, Milky Way Mass, Tidal Influences, Planar Alignments, and Group Infall".

The paper presents proper motions for 39 satellite galaxies and candidates, based on spectroscopically confirmed stars. This is similar to @joshuadsimon's recent paper, and our PMs show agreement with his. Our sample includes more distant dwarfs, though.

Reading this article does not inspire confidence. Sounds more like they’re poised to make the same mistakes all over again. Having spent decades in a fruitless search for WIMPs motivated by the WIMP miracle - an irrelevant numerical coincidence - might they decide to learn more?

The precursor of the radial acceleration relation, the mass discrepancy-acceleration relation, has been known since the previous century. In 2004, I provided a general version for simulators to shoot at: arxiv.org/abs/astro-ph/0…. The response was deafening silence.
When I pointed it out to them, it was met with open hostility. Klypin shouted “WE DON’T HAVE TO EXPLAIN [THAT]! (Astronomical expletive deleted.). Many others also refused to acknowledge that this was an aspect of the data that needed explaining. Some still refuse.

Dad was detained in a #Texas detention center where @RAICESTEXAS consulted. Dad accepted a deportation to be quickly reunited w/ his infant child. However, the Dad was deported & NOT his child. The now 8-month-old baby has been in ORR custody for 4 months. #EndFamilySeparation
The Mom and Dad now have once weekly Skype calls with their 8-month-old baby. That's right, folks. They Skype with an infant. #EndFamilySeparation #FamiliesBelongTogether

Paper day! "Fitting the Radial Acceleration Relation to Individual SPARC Galaxies" by our brilliant student Pengfei Li: arxiv.org/abs/1803.00022 A thread will follow!
In arxiv.org/abs/1609.05917 and arxiv.org/abs/1610.08981 we show that baryons and dynamics are tightly linked in galaxies at a *local* level: the observed acceleration (from the gas rotation curve) correlates with that expected from the distribution of baryons (using Newton's law).
At high accelerations gobs=gbar because baryons fully dominate the dynamics. These data come from the central parts of massive galaxies where there is no need for dark matter. At low accelerations, the data deviates from the 1:1 line. That's the classic indication of dark matter!
