I don't want to be "that guy" who tries to pull down people but does @kayagenc have unpublished sex tapes of the editors of major US publications? His last two pieces, for seriously important outlets, have been remarkable and not in a good way.

What is remarkable about this article is he says "Mr. Erdogan has no elections to face for five years and he can avoid social conflict in the coming days."

Municipalities are the lifeblood of the AKP and their 42% showing tells me that the March 2019 elections might be key.
The less said about his previous piece on the Turkish LGBT movement and its relation to the AKP, the better. That one was all over the place. But this error is something surely the team at NYT should pick up on? It's really basic and proper amateur hour.

As Turkey steps up its belated demonization of the Gezi protests and Kavala/Soros in particular, I’m reminded of why so many friends and I joined those few days of seemingly endless possibility.

It certainly wasn’t because anyone organized us.
I had a few friends who were in Gezi Park from 28 May onwards but I, like the majority of others, only joined on 31 May. As that fateful day progressed, social media was filled with increasingly disturbing images of police brutality. It was an affront to common decency.
I remember my blood boiling at the unfairness of what was happening. Without really coordinating, half of the office waited for the day to end and then literally walked to Taksim. That was my first experience of being gassed. It was deeply scary. Within a week, I’d be immune.

Brain drain has been on the Turkish political agenda for a few days now, with various politicians and personalities jumping into the debate. Given that nothing happens in Turkish politics by accident, my guess is the government is getting shocking data about how many are leaving.
The starting point for the brain drain debate was the offer of money for return of academics (undone within 48 hours by the arrest of academics who had made the mistake of staying). I’ve argued before that money isn’t even a factor for most that leave.
If you’re talented, whether in academia, entrepreneurship or in corporate life, you seek security first, meritocracy second, money some distance behind the other two. If you are not a party member or somehow allied to the government, the first two are always in doubt.

So there used to be this Vietnamese fusion restaurant in Louisville called Asiatique. My best friend, a beautiful full blooded Indigenous woman named Eli, was dating the bartender. We would go in for late night happy hour to get cocktails & snacks.

They would close the main restaurant, but keep the bar open and part of the kitchen. So one night we're there and the walled in patio is "Closed For A Private Party".

Following the direct intervention of President Bashar al-Assad, the Russian force pulled out this morning and avoided any clash with #Hezbollah in the area.

hezbollah maantin and kept all positions. The #Russia/n move was not coordinated.+

#Hezbollah did not...I repeat, did not pull out one single element from the area.

I spoke to people on the ground: The Russian decision was unclear and considered unwelcome by the forces on the ground. Still, many elements of this move are unclear.
