This is a good planet money episode about the fake ratings problem and a company trying to build a solution to identify common fake review tactics and provide readjusted scores

The interesting point is about how ecommerce sites actually want you to buy things, which you're more likely to do with positive reviews. Question is at what point trust in the ratings is eroded to the point that people feel like they have to look elsewhere for reviews.
Ratings have become a barrier to entry for new companies trying to come out with products or services. Realistically even I won't try out something new if it has very few ratings.

There should be better incentive programs + ways for businesses to get the first cohort of ratings
Platforms continue to focus on giving the highest rated stuff to people - which intuitively makes sense but then also makes it hard for new entrants too. Should platforms provide some sort of way for new companies to get some exposure even without existing ratings?
I guess this goes in waves
“We want experts”
“Experts can’t be trusted, let everyone rate”
“Never mind we want experts”
Two issues

1) People want to see ratings from cohorts of people very similar to them (if I like spicy food, I don't want to see food ratings from people that don't)

2) Experts should have ratings that have a heavier weight, but maybe not their identity?
This article isn't necessarily a ton of information that was unknown (but really solid analysis and data to back up those points)

The question is how do you set up incentive systems for employees to be honest and public facing? Ideas?
