Today there was a VA House committee on school safety meeting at Meadowbrook HS in Chesterfield. There has been criticism of this committee as they haven’t had gun control on the table as part of the discussion. (1/6) RVA 🧜🏻‍♀️
This committee will make a recommendation to the General Assembly at the end of this year for legislation needed in 2019. State legislation is not my expertise by any means but keep your eyes out on media outlets tonight b/c on the agenda today was a scheduled (2/6)
tour of Meadowbrook High School to be given by Donald Green who has been the Safety and Security Manager at Chesterfield County Public Schools since July 2014. Recently there were Facebook posts from Green’s PUBLIC Facebook from 2015 discovered. (3/6)
The posts included very hateful, racist memes and comments directed toward those of Middle Eastern decent. I will not repost or share those; however, here are some of the posts here he is very pro-gun including teachers carrying guns. The posts have since been removed (4/6)
from his Facebook. In addition, on his twitter account he has posted his support for hiring retired police into elementary schools and arming teachers. As I mentioned before, this is not typically my area of expertise so anyone with additional information, feel free to (5/6)

As a @ccpsinfo graduate and former student of @SpeakerCox I am disgusted, outraged, and horrified to see Donald Green is not only in charge of school security but involved with committee that will make recommendations on legislation. (6/6) #RVA 🧜🏻‍♀️
Continuing to cruise social media and chatter for updates but am really looking forward to hearing what local news coverage is on the matter. It sounds like while Green was scheduled on the agenda to lead the school tour, he did not attend the meeting. 🧜🏻‍♀️
His absence at one meeting makes his posts and role within a neighboring school district any less disturbing to me. 🧜🏻‍♀️

Good news y’all! @ccpsinfo fired Donald Green yesterday after the FB posts! Glad they reacted to the public outcry. Sad he was allowed to operate in a local school system with these beliefs for so long. #RVA 🧜🏻‍♀️

When we saw a need for a space for the community to talk about economic development and the Navy Hill proposal we weren’t sure what the response from the development group or our elected officials would be. All we knew was this conversation needed to start. (1/9) 🧜🏻‍♀️
Without hesitation @ChelseaWiseRVA agreed to facilitate the discussion & the RSVPs started rolling in. We were pleasantly surprised when we saw one of the first RSVPs was @jeffkelleyrva whose company is contracted to do the communications for the Navy Hill proposal. (2/9) 🧜🏻‍♀️
We saw they posted about the event from their Facebook page as well. To be honest, we didn’t know where that interaction would go. In the days that led up to the event, the development team also reached out to set up a meeting with the organizers and facilitator. (3/9) 🧜🏻‍♀️

The STOP School Violence Act was passed in the Omnibus back in March. It’s now law. Schools have already applied for grant money and those will be awarded by DOJ at the end of the fiscal year. campussafetymagazine.com/safety/stop-sc…
The funding is available for programs that address the exact shortcomings in these recent school shootings— safety infrastructure, training for teachers and administrators, working with law enforcement. What could be a more direct solution to these shootings than that?
This is the biggest investment in school safety in history. A billion dollars over ten years for evidence-based programs that work. Education leaders across the country believe this is a large part of the answer.

The @NRA & #gun companies are not evil but they are part of the problem. And the amazing thing is: all the folks clamoring to #BoycottNRA don't even know how bad it really is!
5 things the #NRA & gun manufacturers have successfully lobbied to create...
1) Background chk system overseen by the ATF that is forbidden to digitize records & so must keep all records on paper
2) BG chk system that is enormously hobbled at ATF bec of extreme funding shortages so that it can't do its job well & so that the NRA can claim it doesn't work
3) Passage of the #Dickey Amendment that forbids gov't research from reaching conclusions that might be construed as advocating for gun control, thus allowing the #NRA to say, "No studies show..." and leaving legislators with no data to back up laws that might work

Those seats in Prince William County, Virginia's second most populous, are a test of the anti-Trump grassroots movements spurred on by the Democratic party and progressive groups.
Of 8 groups, like @MoveOn, @BoldProgressive and @TheDLCC, that made endorsements in VA House races, 41% of their endorsements came to six Democrats challenging Republican incumbents in this county.
