Sounds like between sleek new iPad Pro hardware, Adobe committing to real desktop-class apps, and iOS 13 next year, it’s going to be a fun 12 months for iPad users. I can’t wait. 😍

We’re definitely living in a weird timeline, Apple products-wise – Pro users on the Mac keep being dissatisfied with hardware and they’re getting iOS apps on Mac next year, while pro iPad users seem generally optimistic, hardware rocks, and software keeps improving on all sides
(I’m mostly surprised we ended up like this, with the iPad looking the horse to bet on – God knows how much shit I caught 5 years ago for saying I was leaving the Mac behind. Apple is recovering nicely from years of iPad neglect.)

Welp, iCloud on all my devices (iPhone XS Max, iPad Pro, Mac mini) has started randomly not syncing some things.

Reminders and HomeKit scenes different across devices. Photos and notes are fine.

After signing out and back in, iPhone told me it hadn’t backed up in 4 weeks 🤔
The iPhone is now stuck on doing this backup, saying “2 hours remaining”, and it’s not moving at all (I have a fiber connection).

I have already tried signing out of iCloud and back in everywhere. Honestly not sure what to do except hope it’ll fix itself eventually 🙁
Deleted all my previous incomplete backups, now stuck like this after 90 minutes. Will keep checking later today. 🤔

Shortcuts 2.1 beta 2 is out! Some great changes in this one:

- New actions to create alarms and timers directly in the app
- New Measurement actions
- Better AirPlay integration via HomePod
- New controls to stop sharing a shortcut
With the new Clock actions, it is possible to build simple but effective Pomodoro-style timers in Shortcuts.

You can also create “goodnight” routines more easily by toggling specific alarms directly 👍
Here are the new sharing controls in Shortcuts 2.1 b2. Reopen an iCloud link you previously shared to get an option to delete the link and wipe data from iCloud.

I firmly believe Photoshop on iPad is just the first big example of a shift that will occur in the 3 years with more desktop apps coming to iPad Pro.

Subscriptions, USB-C, cloud files, and more powerful iOS multitasking are accelerating this transition.

i.e. If your files are always in a cloud, and if an app is the same client everywhere thanks to a subscription, and if you have an iPad with a Pencil/trackpad and powerful enough to output 4K to an external display, at which point do you just have a Mac in a different shell?
In other words, this would be the ideal scenario I've been building towards since I effectively stopped using a Mac in 2014.

I want an iPad Pro that can become "a Mac" when *I need it to be* while still being a tablet for everything else. And I believe it's going to happen.

1. Today I did the annual story on holiday decorations at the Governor's residence. I've done it every year, for years. A very light but very fun story. Every year my reporting partner was Wendi Winters. This year, it was Selene. Wendi was murdered in June.
2. Selene did a great job, of course. And I really thought I could hold it together. I moved through the rooms with my tripod, focusing on the trees and ornaments. All I could think about was Wendi. I felt like she was with me, that she was actually present.
3. Not in a "ghost" sense, I hope she has moved on to a better world then Capital feature stories : ) But she was there in my mind. I could almost hear her voice echoing through the empty rooms. "How many cookies are you making this year?", her favorite question..

Per @benthompson's excellent recent podcast, one of the best arguments for Apple's anti-competitive rules on the app store is safety and security.

The idea that we can't have a real desktop browser on our ludicrous-speed iPads because security is undercut by apps like this.
@benthompson To be fair, the Chrome store is much much worse. Just this morning a family member fell for this obvious semi-malicious search hijacker with thousands of obviously fake reviews.

@benthompson Chrome's security team is excellent, but the great work they do to understand the deep structures of multiple OSes and build unparalleled cross-platform sandboxing is negated by ~3M people having this crapware spy on all their browsing.

Because those third party apps understand what we want from our Twitter timeline. To have it in the right order. To not interrupt it every five tweets with something else. To be compact, fast to use, and ultimately to let us read tweets from our friends. You know, the social bit.
But really it’s not about us, what some might call power users. Or early adopters. Mostly people that use twitter in a way now seemingly niche. See something else @robjohnson wrote: is telling. They see the API as a tool for injecting content IN.
@robjohnson It’s about brand interaction. And those monitoring twitter for sentiment. And people building tools for that. It’s not about the end user having a great experience. It’s about making money. And we don’t make the money directly, we’re just aggregated eyeballs.

1/ Bear with, bear with. This is a long thread… EU Withdrawal is being debated in the H of C this week. MPs seem to think they have to support Brexit because it was “the will of the people”. Let’s just summarise the reasons why it’s not.
2/ The UK is a representative democracy. We pay MPs and peers to make intelligent decisions on our behalf. Referendums are not the way we generally do business, mainly because unlike an election, it’s hard to change our minds when the ‘facts’ change.
3/ MPs did not scrutinise the Referendum Bill properly. It was an advisory referendum that 'became' mandatory, & required a ‘simple majority’ of anything over 50% of the vote. Should have specified a ‘supermajority’ of 60% for such a profound change. politics.stackexchange.com/questions/1136…
