One month water bill in a city where you need to boil your water before you can drink it...
Yes, I know about combined sewer overflow, and I love Rock Creek Park and the Potomac River, and I realized that much of the reason that the DC water bills are going up so much is the billions of dollars being spent to deal with that. But I still resent such a high water bill

The NYT has written a great deal abt Chlorpyrifos since 2017, after Pruitt vetoed staff & decided not to ban it, despite evidence it's hurting farm workers/children. Abt 6 million lbs sprayed each yr on soybean/corn/oranges/almonds/
apples/asparagus/grape/broccoli/etc. Eat those?
Here are some of those stories, if you missed them. First, Pruitt rejects his own staff recommendations and decides not to ban the pesticide.

Then @RoniNYTimes and I got the EPA emails that showed how Pruitt in early 2017 had promised the farmers that use the pesticide he was there ready to help them. Emails also showed how EPA staff advice was rejected.

The move by the EPA was under the so-called REGIONAL HAZE rule, that dates back to 1999 and is intended to help cut haze that mars the air in national parks and wilderness areas nationwide. THIS IS WHAT HAZE LOOKS LIKE.
Obama EPA concluded that Best Available Retrofit Technology (BART) upgrades at these nine plants would eliminate 190,000 tons a year of SO2=or more than any other state produces, except Texas. Here is description of that plan.

Alright, let's have some #PhDChat fun! Before I start this thread, keep in mind that this is based on my own experiences - what works for me might not work for someone else & the other way round.

So, how do you survive your PhD and/or stay sane in academia?
1) Choose the supervisor as much as the project.

As mentioned before, a great supervisor can make a non-dream project fun. A bad supervisor can ruin even the most awesome project for you.

Talk to the supervisors, if possible. Talk to other lab members/former PhDs etc.
(This isn't to say that you need to be best buds with your supervisors. You don't. But you should a) at least get along on a fundamental human level and b) have similar work philosophies.) Which leads me to my second point...

Hey yeah let's do another RPG live-read! I backed this interesting action game called Operators from Samjoko Publishing and @kylejsimons and he just did me a solid by resending my PDF copy, so even though it's not available just yet I'm gonna talk about it. Thread incoming.
The book: 205 pages. Cool glitchy cover art, looks like a photomanipulation? Skipping ahead a few pages, yeah, the interior art is photos too. It's a good look for a modern action game.
Chapter 1: Before the Game. Full page piece of collage art which is actually a tad violent -- battle wound, someone I think getting tortured, a bullet hole in a window. It doesn't bug me but probably deserves a content note.

Rather than write a thread about the OIG report, I think I’ll just do running commentary. I’ll thread it so they’ll be easy to find, but this won’t be a typical thread. It could run for days as I plow my way through this monster.
My first observations are from the Executive Summary, and those alone are very damning for the FBI. The OIG wrote of a “culture” of leaking to the media in exchange for gifts; tickets to ballgames, concert tickets, dinners, etc. IMO ANYONE who did that should B fired immediately.
My second observation is that, while the OIG couldn’t find EVIDENCE of bias, he clearly exposed the APPEARANCE of bias. As we all know, convictions require a higher standard of proof in court, so while some may not go to jail, they should NOT be working for the FBI.
