What I learned making some kind of music for 365 consecutive days:
“Discipline” is the process of organizing your life to repeat a beneficial task or set of tasks daily. This skill is the only way to realize any idea or vision.
Sharing your goal or idea and working on it in public is the most immediate way to increase your level of discipline.
Doing something everyday is a guaranteed way to get better at it. It sounds obvious, but most people don’t do this. They look for courses, books or inspiration instead even though this guaranteed method exists.
There are a lot of things in life that you can not control. But making something everyday is something you can control.
When you try to make something everyday, you will be limited by your personal habits and life situation. I was doing this experiment during the time my first child was born.

Your life will adjust around this daily output. Your family and friends will start to adjust too.
When you want to get something done, do not multi task. Set a timer for 25mins and work on a single task. Then take a 5 min break.

If you keep making things daily, you will find yourself hitting a flow state within a few minutes. This experience will shock at your first.
It is important to let go of preconceived ideas about how to make things and how long things should take. Your ideas are likely very outdated. Current technology has transformed how most things are made and what’s possible in a single day.

You won’t know until you dig in.
Making something everyday for 365 days helps you understand what you can actually do in a year. This knowledge allows you to form ideas for multi-year projects.
1 year is not enough time to get really good at something.
Your time on this planet is limited. It can take 5-10 years to get good at something. So you will only be able to master very few things.
Thinking about “likes” while developing your skills is a black hole. You have to find a way to let go of your need for attention to focus on learning and doing good work. Everything else comes after that.
Prioritize quantity in the short term to gain quality in the long term.
When starting something new, your focus has to be on producing a large quantity of output. If you instead aim for quality your skill level won’t be able to achieve your vision of quality and you will give up.

Making terrible things is part of the process.
Pursuing your dreams is a good way to take inventory of who your real supporters are. Some family and friends will support you and others will not. Some of this will get you down, but it’s important to adjust and spend time with the ones who care.
When I started this experiment on July 16th 2017, I had never made any music in my life. This process yielded 365 tracks with a run time of 20hrs 28mins and 46secs. The first track is the first musical thing I made in my life.
