Voted on a cynical bill to give a blanket endorsement to the practices of ICE. While doing nothing to reunite kids w/ parents or address legitimate concerns about practices within ICE, it did condone militarization of the border & the admin’s zero tolerance policies. I voted NO.
I don’t support the abolishment of ICE, but it’s wrong to pass leg that praises some of the practices that need reform. Those of us who call the border home, including ICE officers & border patrol agents who live in our communities, know we can do better than current policies.
That we can make our immigration laws and enforcement more humane. We should start by using the House, the world's most deliberative body, to talk about real crises facing our country. The fact that more than 2,500 kids remain separated from their parents after we took them away.
The fact that the wealthiest, most powerful country in the world is abandoning our asylum laws. That our current immigration laws -- built on fear and cemented by characterizing immigrants as criminals, rapists, animals, an infestation -- don't reflect the reality on the ground.
