@pragmatistic @SushantSin This is a curious reading of the agreement. Will explain over the next few tweets. Apologies in advance for blowing up your mentions, @sushantsin.
@pragmatistic @SushantSin Here, he implies that the agreement expired in 2018. When the text clearly notes that it can be "renewed by tacit consent" thereafter. In other words, the agreement will renew by default, unless a countervailing agreement is concluded.
@pragmatistic @SushantSin Further, Article 18 requires a written notice of termination to end the agreement.
@pragmatistic @SushantSin WRT Point 9, the scope is very likely to include the price details. Since Macron stated that it was to protect the commercial interests of French (and Indian) companies.
@pragmatistic @SushantSin To expand, the agreement covers "classified information and material", which is defined as below. If the French classified price details as secret/confidential/restricted, then they are. And there's a slim chance that they weren't classified.
@pragmatistic @SushantSin Again, coming back to Point 9, oversight has no bearing on classification level. Government auditors and members of the Standing Committee on Defence possess the security clearances necessary to access this information. The public does not.
@pragmatistic @SushantSin WRT Pint 10: Like we discussed before, Smt. Sitharaman was too hasty with her words. The government has handled the whole controversy rather poorly.
@pragmatistic @SushantSin Dr. Bhamre's statement does not reveal any detail. It merely provides and approximate cost figure. And again, there's no reason to believe that it wasn't an ill-advised disclosure.
@pragmatistic @SushantSin Not a single media report revealed the price breakdown. They merely mentioned the value of the whole contract. The only journalist to provide a detailed breakdown has been Ajai Shukla. He did so in 2018, not 2016. And he has not revealed his sources.
@pragmatistic @SushantSin And finally, the terms of the January 2008 agreement are publicly available, and leave very little room for interpretation. Furthermore, there is very little evidence of any wrongdoing on the government's part. So it beats me why we continue to spread FUD on the topic.
@pragmatistic @SushantSin And I'm not saying this as a purported BJP supporter. I was equally critical of the BJP when its leadership raised all manner of nonsensical objections to the 123 Agreement with the US.
