Next few tweets to highlight changes with GOP over recent years. Mute me if you don’t like charts...
Republicans increasingly likely to call themselves "Conservative”
“Conservative" has become more of cultural term, and less of ideological description.
GOP has become more negative on free trade
GOP has become less supportive of Immigration
…And more supportive of border wall
GOP is now in more in favor of stricter gun laws
Republicans are also more supportive of gay marriage
And pot. GOP more favorable to legalizing marijuana
Small uptick in % of GOP that never attends religious services
More GOP support for increasing minimum wage
And a plurality of GOP now support increasing taxes on high-earners
GOP was once coalition of fiscal and social conservatives. Very different today.
The GOP less of an appetite for socially conservative positions. And the country club GOPers are either dying off and/or leaving the party.
Much of this change has come from demographic shifts within the party
Non-college whites have seen dramatic decline in their overall share of US adult population...
...but as share of national party vote coalitions, the decline has come only at the expense of the Dem coalition
Non-college whites have increasingly been calling themselves “Republican”...trend since Reagan era
When it comes to how each view the two parties, the split between college whites and non-college whites grew around 2008-09.
Similar split on which party is trusted on major issues such as Economy, Health care and Immigration
end
