If you want to explain why the June 2016 was dubious, and why there now needs to be a #PeoplesVote, there are various arguments you can make. The most obvious one is that the Electoral Commission found the Leave campaign had broken the rules on funding...
...as the UK is a signatory to the Venice Commission, we should care about the validity of referenda. Somebody will say "but it was only advisory" in which case - why are we still acting on it? venice.coe.int/webforms/docum…
Another reason is that a simple majority should not be enough to make such a profound change to a country's constitution. A Supermajority should be needed. This is where people will tall you "but it was only advisory"... Schroedinger's referendum...
If you want to make a change to the rules of a local branch of the Conservative Party, you need a 2/3 majority. Really! See page 68 of the attached. Should a whole country be changed on a lesser mandate that that? politike.al/wp-content/upl…
Here's another reason. The electorate was gerrymandered. 3 million EU27 people living among us had no vote, even though their lives would be affected most severely by Brexit. Is that fair?
You might say "Only British people should vote in a British election." But, if you were an Australian Barista on a gap year in London, or a Nigerian student spending three years at a UK University, you did have a vote, even though your life would be totally unaffected. Fair?
Then there is the case of the British citizens who have been living in the rest of Europe for more than 15 years. No vote, even though they might want to return. Even though those on pensions saw an immediate reduction in income of 18% from the fall in the £.
It's not even clear whether it is legal to prevent British citizens from voting in a British referendum (court cases ongoing). The only people who normally have their voting rights denied are prisoners. So we punish UK citizens as if they were criminals? Not fair!
Then the next reason to say the referendum was invalid, is that nobody knew what they were voting for. In fact, it looks like what they were told they were voting for is not actually an option. What did the Leave campaigners say? Oh year, they said this...
And they said this...
And they said this...
And they said this...
In fact the Leave campaign said a lot of things that our Prime Minister and other Brexiters have now ignored and are going for the hardest possible Brexit. The Leave campaign also used racist campaigning to appeal to people's fear and ignorance. Like this...
And this...
And famously, on the day Jo Cox MP was murdered by a right-wing extremist, they released this...
Finally, thanks to @carolecadwalla and others, there are strong indications that our referendum was meddled with and paid for by hostile foreign powers. More info being revealed day by day. I guess that would count as "impermissible donations" if you were being picky.
And then there's the government's own prediction that we will all be worse off. This was the kind of due diligence that should have been done BEFORE any referendum, but is belatedly becomeing public now. EVERY kind of Brexit is harmful to our bank balances.
And, as ever, the poorest regions of our country will come off worst. HM Treasury's own estimates. Did anybody who voted Leave really vote for that?
So if anyone says despite the terrible consequences of the June 2016 referendum, we have to go careering on with Brexit "because democracy", tell them no, it was far from democratic. It was deeply flawed, possibly illegal, and probably influenced by hostile foreign powers.
I'd prefer it if MPs in Parliament called a halt to this dangerous nonsense now, but if they won't, we need a #PeoplesVote.
