This is a hugely welcome report by @CommonsJustice. It confirms what criminal lawyers have been saying for years about the underfunding of the criminal justice system. [1/5]
This is the take-home for the Ministry of Justice.

“We conclude that the under-funding of the criminal justice system in England & Wales threatens its effectiveness, and in doing so undermines the rule of law and tarnishes the reputation of the justice system as a whole.” [2/5]
The report looks at the effect of criminal legal aid cuts on the long-term future of the profession.

“We conclude that there is compelling evidence of the fragility of the Criminal Bar and criminal defence solicitors’ firms [...] this risk can no longer be ignored.” [3/5]
But the report also considers the wider state of funding of the criminal justice system. It does not make for pretty reading. (It does however give a shout-out to the book, which is gratifying). [4/5]
There are many important recommendations, chief among which is a call for an urgent cross-departmental review of funding for *all* elements of the criminal justice system, including legal aid and the CPS.

Let’s see if the Ministry of Justice pays attention. [5/5]
