Setting aside whether Kessler should have been interviewed at all, I don't think this interview was handled well. npr.org/2018/08/10/637…
No mention in the interview of the fascist violence at Charlottesville last year, or of the fact that Kessler's people show up at these things outfitted as Turner Diaries LARPers.
If you're going to go toe-to-toe with a white supremacist on race and IQ bullshit, you have to bring more to the table than laughing when he mentions Charles Murray.
"Question, followup, move on" works in a lot of contexts, but it's insufficient when you've got a white supremacist lying to your face. You gotta be willing to push harder.
What's with letting yourself fall for the "Neo-Nazis hate me" rhetorical dodge while interviewing a white supremacist in 2018? It's literally in the Richard Spencer punch video. Come on.
If you're putting a white supremacist on your air, you need to—at a minimum—have prepared in enough depth to predict what they're going to say and know how you're going to respond before the tape starts rolling. That didn't happen here.
There's other folks who know far more about this than I do, and I'm sure they picked up on a bunch of stuff I missed. That I could hear four rookie mistakes in a single quick listen does not speak well of the NPR team's prep work.
Oh, here's another thing. Noel King said that the National Parks Service was her source for the claim that David Duke and others were invited speakers at Jasno Kessler's march. It wasn't. Kessler was.
Here's an email from Jason Kessler to the NPS, dated June 16, in which he lists David Duke as a "confirmed speaker" at the proposed August 12 event in DC.
Here's the relevant section of the application a bit bigger.
And here's a link to the PDF, from the NPS website. nps.gov/aboutus/foia/u…
And here again, via @RachelLarris, is how that section of the interview went.
Note that Kessler doesn't initially deny that Duke was invited to speak, and that King doesn't press him on the question. She lets him change the subject to whether he likes neo-Nazis.
Here's the followup she should have gone with: "I have in my hand a planning email from you to the NPS in which you state that you have invited David Duke to speak at your event and that he has accepted."
IF you're going to have Jason Kessler on about this rally, for god's sake, you have to at some point make him deny that he invited David Duke as a speaker, or make him admit it. The interview can't go on beyond that until he does one of those two things.
