I really appreciate Craig Brown’s kind, generous and honest review, but I must disagree (and explain why) with this part: “at least three-quarters of the photographs in this book involve war, death and destruction. Gloom takes centre stage”
Our goal was not to create a book made only of glamorous and beautiful photos of kings and queens. it is not a book made just to decorate a room.
The proposal of The Colour of Time is to tell/summarize the history of the world from 1850 to 1960, so we chose photos that would best represent the main events that occurred within this period of so many changes.
Therefore, some of these photos involve war and destruction - because that’s what happened. It would not be historically accurate and appropriate to forget about the wars and rebellions for the sake of creating a book packed with glamorous shots.
This was one of the most important periods in the history of mankind, and such events shaped the world we live in today. (as well as progress in technology, in the arts, in culture - things that are also present in the book.)
Anyway, it’s just a brief explanation because he was wondering why we decided to choose those specific photos, and I thought this would be a great opportunity to explain it to you as well.

Thanks Craig for such a generous review! We loved it.
