1) The Obama administration did not "bet on Iran"-- there was never, not even for a SECOND, any kind of pivot away from the Saudi-UAE-Israel axis. They just wanted to get a deal with Iran.

I don't know how you can know about any aspect of American history, from genocidal extermination of Natives to how the for-profit prison system operates, and think that the children ICE has "lost" are somehow a break with American patterns of behaviour.
The only difference is that people are talking about it and caring about it with a wider audience than usual.

This is how ICE has operated for years. This is how America has operated for centuries.

I was in grad school when I decided I was not going to pretend that I’d read certain things when I hadn’t. When other academics, usually peers, would say “Oh have you read [insert author/book here], I’d look them dead in the eyes and say “No.”
It wasn’t even for any explicitly “political” reason or thoughtfulness about the narrowness of the Western canon. I was mostly just annoyed by the presumption that I’m supposed to have read the same books so-and-so had read. The world is big. There are hella books.
I still find it’s incredibly freeing to say “I‘m really not familiar with ___” or “I don’t understand ___” when it’s true. It’s important to read widely & often, but if someone’s trying to shame you for not having read something yet, they are a very boring person imo.
