One reviewer decimated me for not having publications when I applied for @NSF GRFP. Yesterday, 2.5 hours w/my team and we've divided up writing of my first paper. Plus *another* paper in the works. I'll have two as a 2nd year grad student. Take that! 👊

To be clear: I had *just begun* grad school when I applied for the fellowship. So, yeah, they pummeled me for not having a paper as a first year grad student, although I clearly outlined the research that's coming together into a publication (coming soon to a journal near you 😀)
So, I got rejected, but got an honorable mention from the @NSF, because one reviewer sucked. And guess what? I'm still gonna science and show exactly why I was one of the people they should've funded! 🙂 There's my rejection story =)
In fact, I'm working on both as we speak! The research from my previous institution in Mathematica, and my new one using Illustris data (!!) in python 👩‍💻

It's #BlackHoleFriday! So today, I'm going to tell you about how using a black hole could help us reach one of humanity's greatest aspirations that's only ever seen in sci-fi movies and TV shows: time travel! (Well, *kinda*) A thread:

Special Relativity tells us that, for objects that move really fast (like a spaceship), or ones in a large gravitational field (near a star, or say, a black hole), time moves slower than for objects at rest (for example, on Earth).
And I'm here to tell you that, if you took a spaceship and circled around a black hole, time would move slower for you than, say, your friend back on Earth! We'll calculate a specific example, and factor in the time it takes (and what happens to it!) for a spaceship to get there!

I thought I’d share a few *very general* — and very late night — thoughts on how I think the Alabama defense should approach their matchup against the Oklahoma offense.
The biggest thing to kinda get out of the way at the beginning is that there’s no stopping this Oklahoma offense. They’re gonna score plenty of points on December 29th.
Their offense is one of two best in the country. Kyler is one of the two best quarterbacks in the country. Their offensive line is one of, if not the best unit in the entire country. Their skill guys are awesome, particularly Hollywood who is as electric as any receiver in CFB.

Yesterday, @haleshannon got trolled by a weakass MAGAbot raging at her for her privilege as a "rich NYT bestseller." I don't know how many authors have to explain this before people get it, but I guess it's my turn.
The truth: I would not be able to write if my husband wasn't the primary breadwinner of our family. The little trickle of personal income that I have is from my part time job as a bookseller. I work about 15-17 hours a week above minimum wage.
But--THE AUTHOR STUFF. Let's do a hypothetical. DISCLAIMER: This is not MY book deal, this is simply a way of breaking down payments.

1)Portfolios are NOT magic. Simply having one doesn't get you a job. Tey are a tool to be used in chasing work and an increasing number of employers ask for them. Having one can be very useful, but just putting some bits of writing in the same place does not = instant career.
2) People tend to read your email first, then your c.v. and then portfolio. Mess up stages 1, or 2 and 3 may well not matter. Always rework your email, c.v. and portfolio for EVERY application. Focus on what matches that job/company.
