Listen up it's sunday night DM science. I have a beautiful d20 but I feel like it always rolls poorly. (1/n)
So first some anatomy. Plastic dice look smooth on the outside, but on the inside the resin is porous meaning little bubbles can form (2/n)
So this can mean your die is unevenly weighted giving a non random distribution of numbers (3/n)
To assess this I, a marine biologist, will use buoyancy manipulation to assess how fair my die is (FYI @LadyoftheHag can attest to how shitty this die is) 4/n
Step 1 assemble ingredients: a jar, tap water, salt, poorly rolling die 5/n
Step 2 add salt to the bottom of the jar 6/n
Next boil water. Hot water has water molecules that move more quickly than cold water so it's easier for the Na+ and Cl- (salt) ions to interact with the H20 7/n. Note TNG inspired kettle not required
Next dissolve the existing salt and then add more salt until your die will float. How can something that sinks in freshwater float in salt water? 8/n
Density is mass over volume. The higher the density the easier it is for studd to float. Fresh H2O has just water in it, salt H2O has water plus that crap load of salt you just added, so per mL of volume it has more mass 9/n
So now that we have a floating d20 we can assess how it rolls more easily. I poked the die down with a spoon and let it float back up, recording the number 10/n
One poor roll isnt enough. Science needs replication so I dunked the die 10 times. (I would have liked to do more but my kids were antsy). Here are the results. Five times I got a 6 (note: the 16 and the 19 are adjacent to the 6) 11/n
I then calculated the probability of this occuring randomly, using keisan.casio.com/exec/system/12…. The odds were really low of this occuring by random - about a 4% chance. 12/n
Here's the probability distribution for those wondering 13/n
So science shows there's a real reason why this die hates me. Dice jail won't help, I'll just have to save this one for when I'm trying to be kind to my players. 14/15
Thus in conclusion, science is awesome. DnD is awesome, when you combine them it's even better 15/15. Thank you, have a plesant week.
