THREAD:
If the report in the Telegraph is true about the UK government “taking the moral high ground”, we are with the3million: this is two years too late. The time for taking the moral high ground was June 2016. 1/5
The UK should have made it clear from the beginning that the existing rights of EU citizens would be confirmed then – instead, the EU had to make a comprehensive offer on citizens’ rights first in May 2017 before the UK followed with an inferior counter offer in June 2017. 2/5
Also deeply disappointing that the language appears to be couched around the need for labour, and to avoid labour shortages, rather than welcoming EU27 as human beings who have made their lives in the UK and contributed to UK life in so many ways. But... 3/5
the devil is in the detail as always-some key areas would need to be resolved reciprocally anyway to make this a reality, not least access to healthcare & pensions. And as usual, no mention of British cits in the EU, who always seem to be an afterthought for the UK government 4/5
The UK and the EU could both take the moral high ground if they simply agreed to ring fence and honour the political agreement reached in December on citizens’ rights whatever happens – this is what we and the3million have been asking them to do for months. [END]
(and for some reason I completely forgot to tag @The3Million - doh!)
