We were appalled by Theresa May’s statements in her CBI speech yesterday about ‘queue jumping’.
[A THREAD]
2/ We stand by our friends @The3Million in solidarity against this insult and are disgusted that different groups of citizens who live in the UK are being pitted against each other.
3/ And if EU citizens in the UK are queue jumpers then so are we, in addition to being ‘citizens of nowhere”, Theresa May!
4/ We are also appalled by this Conservative Party video that Theresa May tweeted from her account.
5/ It perpetuates the misconception that free movement only goes one way and that Brits are going to get special treatment. We’re not.

@BritishinEurope are losing our free movement rights and so will Brits in the UK.
6/ And if Theresa May had ever taken the time to meet us, she would have known that free movement is key to @BritishinEurope livelihoods and family lives.

So why exactly is she celebrating this?
7/ We are told, “Free movement will end. Once and for all”. But “you [i.e. Brits] will still have visa-free travel to the EU”.
These are two different things and both of them go both ways because they are reciprocal.
8/ Free movement is the right to move and reside freely across the EU, which all EU citizens have.
Visa-free travel is just that – the right to travel without a visa e.g. go on holiday or a business trip.
9/ If free movement ends for other EU citizens coming to the UK, then it does for British citizens who want to move and reside in the EU.

If British people will still have visa-free travel to the EU, then EU citizens will still have visa free travel to the UK.
10/ But don’t conflate free movement with being able to travel visa-free, as this video encourages you to do.

Let’s be clear, what this means if free movement ends for British people in the UK.
11/ You will need a visa and a work permit if you want to work in another European country.

If you want e.g. to work on a short-term contract or do a construction job in another European country, you will need paperwork.
12/ You will need paperwork if you want to provide cross-border services.

If your kids want to study in another European country because of rising fees in the UK, they will need a visa.
13/ If your kids want to do an internship or work in another European country, they will need a visa.

Without all that paperwork, you won’t be able simply to move and live in another EU country like you can now.
14/ And even when you travel, there will be restrictions because visa free travel means you can travel 90 days in every 180.

So don’t be taken in. Your rights will be taken away from you, just like ours are being taken away.
