1. “There are no words that I have been able to find in the vocabulary of the English language that adequately express my feelings in this presence on this occasion…"
2. “But you know and I know, that though I might speak with the tongue men and of angels, neither song nor story could fittingly honor this glorious event….”
3. That’s how Julian Carr began his speech at this statue’s dedication in 1913, praising Confederate soldiers. “All time will be the millennium of their glory,” he said.
4. But that was not all Carr said. “One hundred yards from where we stand … I horse-whipped a negro wench until her skirts hung in shreds.”
5. Such acts, Carr said, were no less what the statue honored: “What the Confederate soldier meant to the welfare of the Anglo Saxon race during the four years immediately succeeding the war.”
6. Whatever you think of what happened at UNC tonight, grapple first with what was memorialized on this campus for the past century.
