This seems to be the consensus about the best place to contribute to disaster relief in Kerala. The site is very user-friendly. If you've never been to Kerala, it might be hard to relate. There is so much suffering in the world: Why should Kerala be a priority? And honestly,
I don't have a good answer to that, except it is, or was, the most beautiful place I've seen in my life. Here, someone asks, on Quora, "How beautiful is Kerala?" quora.com/How-beautiful-… See the answers. Those photos aren't enhanced. Those are the real colors you see.
It has an extraordinarily rich culture. It's called the spice garden of the world, and it's been the center of the spice trade since about 3000 BC. Kerala is the plce Columbus and Vasgo de Gama were actually trying to reach. Herodotus described it:
This chapter about the Jews of Kerala will give you a bit of a sense of how surprising and fascinating and layered its history is: books.google.fr/books?id=qhKGP…. Actually, so will this Wikipedia entry: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spice_tra…
It's so incredibly dense with beauty, natural and man-made. I spent a week in one tiny village there. I found it by accident. I was astonished that I'd never even heard or read about this place. I realized I could--literally--spend the rest of my life there and never get bored.
People there were so friendly and hospitable to me. So many people offered to share their meals. They were as curious about me as I was about them. "Please," one man said to me, "You must come to see my dynamic god!" And ... he took me to see his dynamic god.
If I recall rightly, it was an incarnation of Kali? (I may be wrong about that.) But it was truly dynamic: Only one time before had I seen that kind of passion and fervor for an idol. The idol was Mick Jagger. We thought it might be the last-ever Rolling Stones concert tour.
(In 1981. Yes, really. 2018 and they're still touring. Mick Jagger's an incarnation of Kali.) But I only remember two experiences like that in my life, and that was one of them. Anyway, we exchanged addresses, and for years, he sent me friendly, handwritten letters.
Not Mick Jagger--my acquaintance. I imagine that Kerala is a bit more jaded and less innocent now. Back then there weren't all that many tourists. But they've organized their tourism industry in a really intelligent way, with a focus on eco-tourism:
Not only is that trendy, but it really makes sense. Kerala's biodiversity is among the world's most significant: If anyplace should be scrupulously conserved, that's one of them. Oh, and it's full of charismatic megafauna! Tigers! elephants! periyartigerreserve.org/Periyar/
I didn't see tigers, but I sure did see elephants. And monkeys. But the thing is, worrying that Kerala will be destroyed by tourism doesn't really make sense right now. Because it has been devastated--just devastated--by floods. firstpost.com/india/kerala-a…
This bishop is 100 years old. He says it's far worse than the 1924 flood: ndtv.com/kerala-news/ke… "When the 1924 floods came, he recalls seeing the river in spate, washing away houses and domestic animals."
This video will remind you of the Cajun Navy. It's the Kerala equivalent. The heroism and bravery have been remarkable. So, even if you have no memories of Kerala or personal connection to it ... it's a place that you'd want to help if you did.
With the dollar so strong, anyone who has dollars could make a real difference just by contributing ten bucks--700,25 rupees. Household bleach costs about 50 rupees. Water purification tablets, about 80 rupees. So you can see how much that could help. amazon.in/dp/B078YTMXXD/…
Based on my experience, I think people in Kerala would do the same for you. They're lovely people. Kerala is part of all of humanity's shared heritage. It's a damned shame this happened.
Here's the best place, from what I can tell, to help out: donation.cmdrf.kerala.gov.in
