This "don't call us TERFs" shit isn't special to TERFs.

Often enough, racists don't wanna be called racists, misogynists don't wanna be called misogynists, homophobes don't wanna be called homophobes &c.

or "nationalists"

or "just facing the facts"

or "recognizing biological innevitability"

or "traditionalists"

or "upholding family values"

or "just asking questions"

or "engaging critically with PC dogma"

Aside: Here's a pretty remarkable example of Richard Spencer tossing around the term "judeo-critical". (This doesn't appear to be a widely-used term, but insistence on a distinction between "anti-semitic" and "counter-semitic" looks like it might be more common?)

& They're always ready to explain to you how the REAL problem is people "silencing" them and "shutting down debate" by being willing to call bigotry bigotry, hence the absurd but alarmingly popular "calling us racists is a form of censorship" talking point.

This strategy is popular because a lot of people are easily fooled by it.

But there are also plenty of you who get this in a good variety of cases.

& what's disappointing today in Philosophy (& a lot of other days in a lot of other spaces) is that many of you who seem to know better for other cases refuse to recognize the TERF version for what it is & instead insist that it merits serious consideration.

Sorry to not get this in earlier, but it bears saying explicitly that it's also disappointing AF how many philosophers fail to see the problem with some or all of the other cases.
